About Johann Gabriel Meder’s early life, we know extremely little. He was born near Gotha (Germany), but moved to Amsterdam around 1760 (or perhaps as early as 1755). There, in addition to teaching music, he organized many concerts in which he presented cantatas and oratorios of his own making, as well as works by other composers. One of his cantatas, entitled “La contessa e la pace”, was performed for the marriage of William V of Orange and Princess Wilhelmine of Prussia, so we may assume that Meder was an excellent composer. The set of six marches published around 1794 which I present here is not a “deep” work, but these pieces sure are “catchy”! – – David Bolton, “The Digital Harpsichordist” What’s that you say?
