Claudio Abbado and the Orchestra Mozart perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G major, BWV 1049, at the Teatro Municipale Valli in Reggio Emilia, Italy (2007). This Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 has a very special line-up: principal violin (Giuliano Carmignola), two recorders (Michala Petri and Nikolaj Tarasov) and a string orchestra. Bach described the recorders as "Fiauti d'echo", or "echo flutes", although it’s not quite clear what he meant by that. The fourth of the Brandenburg concerts is the only work that uses "echo flutes" as far as we know today. Presto The Brandenburg Concertos (BWV 1046–1051) by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750) are a collection of six instrumental works, which Bach dedicated to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg, in 1721. They are regarded as some of the best orchestral compositions of the Baroque era. The concerts were, however, likely composed between 1718 and 1721, for Bach’s Köthener Hofkappelle. Bach’s original title, Six Concerts with Various Instruments, describes exactly what is special about these concerts; the varied use of several instruments – with different strings, wind instruments, or solo harpsichord for the concertini. Claudio Abbado +••.••(...)) is considered one of the greatest conductors of all time. In 2011, Classic Voice music magazine named Abbado the most important of the top 100 living conductors. He was born into a family of musicians in Milan, Italy, on June 26, 1933. Following his study of conducting, piano, and composition at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan, he furthered his education at the Vienna Music Academy. In 1968, Abbado became head conductor of the Milan Scala. In the subsequent years, he could be seen on the world’s great concert stages; in Milan, London, and Chicago. Following his 1984 debut at the Vienna State Opera, he became the city’s general music director. In October of 1989, the members of the Berlin Philharmonic elected him artistic director, succeeding Herbert von Karajan. He remained in Berlin until 2002. Abbado died in Bologna on January 20, 2014, aged 80, following a long battle with cancer. Up-Close, for Cello, String Ensemble and Film ( 2010 ) In Michel van der Aa’s Grawemeyer Award winning cello concerto Up-close, the traditional interaction of soloist and ensemble is reflected by a mysterious, mirror reality seen on film. When the piece begins, a solo cellist and string ensemble sit on the right of the stage; on the left stands a large video screen. On the screen we see an elderly lady sitting among an arrangement of chairs and music stands that parallels the real-life version on the other side of the stage. It soon becomes clear that this is only one of a variety of interactions across a hall of mirrors created by the soloist, ensemble and film. Are the elderly woman and the cellist playing out the same role? The film is seen in excerpts ‘inserted’ into the music, so is the music driving the film, or the film the music? The music never ‘narrates’ the film, but somehow the two layers seem to extend one another around a common subject. Furthermore, the live instruments are augmented with an electronic soundtrack, which at some times seems closely related to their music and at others appears to derive from the ‘concrete’ sounds of the action on screen. Are these plural realities or versions of a single experience. Much is left unexplained and the course of the piece, including a striking coup de théâtre towards the end, provides no easy answers. One theme that does emerge, however, concerns loneliness. As in other Van der Aa pieces – such as the video opera One or the ensemble piece Mask – elements of an uncanny, inscrutable ceremony are never far away, and in Up-close these become part of the difficult ritual of human to human contact. Yevgeny Aleksandrovich Mravinsky (Russian: Евге́ний Алекса́ндрович Мрави́нский) (4 June [O.S. 22 May] 1903 / 19 January 1988) was a Soviet-Russian conductor. Mravinsky was born in Saint Petersburg. The soprano Yevgeniya Mravina was his aunt. His father died in 1918, and in that same year, he began to work backstage at the Mariinsky Theatre. He first studied biology at the university in Leningrad, before going to the Leningrad Conservatory to study music. He served as a ballet repetiteur from 1923 to 1931. His first public conducting appearance was in 1929. Through the 1930s he conducted at the Kirov Ballet and Bolshoi Opera. In September 1938, he won the All-Union Conductors Competition in Moscow. In October 1938, Mravinsky took up the post that he was to hold until 1988: principal conductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom he had made his debut as a conductor in 1931. Under Mravinsky, the Leningrad Philharmonic gained a legendary reputation, particularly in Russian music such as Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich. During World War II, Mravinsky and the orchestra were evacuated to Siberia. But members of the Leningrad Philharmonic's reserve orchestra and the Leningrad Radio Orchestra were left behind in the siege of Leningrad, so it fell to Karl Eliasberg to conduct the surviving musicians in the Leningrad premiere of the Symphony No.7 "Leningrad" by Shostakovich. Mravinsky first went on tour abroad in 1946, including performances in Finland and in Czechoslovakia (at the Prague Spring Festival). Later tours with orchestra included a June 1956 itinerary to West Germany, East Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Their only tour to Great Britain was in September 1960 to the Edinburgh Festival and the Royal Festival Hall, London. Their first tour to Japan was in May 1973. Their last foreign tour was in 1984, to West Germany. His last concert was on 6 March 1987 (Schubert, Symphony No. 8, and Brahms, Symphony No. 4). Mravinsky died in Leningrad in 1988, aged 84. Recordings reveal Mravinsky to have an extraordinary technical control over the orchestra, especially over dynamics. He was also a very exciting conductor, frequently changing tempo in order to heighten the musical effect for which he was striving, often making prominent use of brass instrumentation. Surviving videos show that Mravinsky had a sober appearance at the podium, making simple but very clear gestures, often without a baton. The critic David Fanning has memorably described some of Mravinsky's Tchaikovsky performances: 'The Leningrad Philharmonic play like a wild stallion, only just held in check by the willpower of its master. Every smallest movement is placed with fierce pride; at any moment it may break into such a frenzied gallop that you hardly know whether to feel exhilarated or terrified'.... Ukrainian performer Dmytro Hnatyuk Song title "Two colors" (original "Dva kolory") DMYTRO HNATYUK IS THE GOLDEN VOICE OF UKRAINE The singer declared a clear Ukrainian identity in all the years of the Soviet regime. He made many efforts to popularize Ukrainian song classics, some of which were banned. In the 1960s and 1970s, his presentable, tall figure and unusual, noble artistry supported the spirit and self-awareness of the Ukrainian nation, humiliated by Russification and deliberate provincialism. The anthem of the generation of the 1960s was the song "Two Colors", first performed by Dmitro Hnatiuk. In 1991, the singer enthusiastically welcomed the restoration of state independence of Ukraine. In 2004 he took part in the Orange Revolution, in particular he performed folk songs in front of participants of round-the-clock rallies on the stage of Independence Square. As a director he staged more than 20 plays. He worked as the main director of the National Opera, taught at the Petro Tchaikovsky National Academy of Music of Ukraine (Kyiv Conservatory). He was a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. Hero of Ukraine, People's Artist of Ukraine, winner of the Taras Shevchenko National Prize. For outstanding personal merits before the Ukrainian state in the development of Ukrainian musical culture, enrichment of the national treasury of opera and folk art, significant creative achievements, high professionalism, many years of fruitful creative and socio-political activity, significant contribution to consolidating Ukrainian society, building democratic, social and the rule of law was awarded the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise V, IV, III degrees. Dmytro Hnatyuk died on April 29, 2016. He was buried with honors at the Baykovo Cemetery in Kyiv on May 4.
