On collectionCB and collectionCB3 we can also listen to Franco Alfano’s « Natale Campano » from « Suite Romantica » (1909), « Symphonie n°1 "Classica" » (1910 ; rév. 1923 et 1953) and « Divertimento » for small orchestra and piano obbligato (1934). Formé aux Conservatoires de Milan, de Leipzig puis de Berlin, l’Italien Franco Alfano est surtout connu pour ses douze opéras dont « Résurrection » (1904 ; d’après l’œuvre de Tolstoï), « La Légende de Sakunlata » (1921 ; réécrit en 1952 sous le titre « Sakunlata » ; d’après un texte sacré hindou), « Cyrano de Bergerac » (1936 ; d’après la pièce d’Edmond Rostand), « Don Juan de Manara » (1941). En 1901 il compose à Paris, pour les Folies Bergère, deux ballets à succès : « Napoli » et « Lorenza ». Peu avant la Première Guerre mondiale sa réputation de compositeur grandit avec la « Suite romantica » (1909) et la « Symphonie n°1 "Classica" » (1910, révisée en 1953). Durant la Première Guerre mondiale et les Années Vingt Franco Alfano écrit ses musiques de chambre les plus importantes, parmi lesquelles la « Sonate pour violon » (1923) et la contemplative « Sonate pour violoncelle » (1925) considérée comme son chef-d’œuvre instrumental. Il se fait aussi connaître en achevant en 1926, à la demande du célèbre chef d’orchestre Arturo Toscanini, le dernier opéra de Puccini « Turandot ». Dans les Années Trente Alfano s’essaie au style néo-classique avec les symphonies n°2 (1932) et n°3 "Sinfonia breve" (1939), le « Divertimento pour piano et orchestre de chambre » (1925) et le ballet « Vésuve » (1933). La « Symphonie n°1 "Classica" », composée en 1910, fait preuve d’une énergie d’une grande élégance, sans cesse renouvelée.
