(http•••) ■ BUR DUBAI: Bur Dubai is a historic district in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, located on the western side of the Dubai Creek. The name literally translates to Mainland Dubai, a reference to the traditional separation of the Bur Dubai area from Deira by the Dubai Creek. This is because Bur Dubai historically consisted of all districts between the western bank of the Creek and Jumeirah. The Ruler's Court is located in the district adjacent to the Grand Mosque. The district is home to several mosques including the Grand Mosque with the city's tallest minaret, and the blue tiled Iranian Mosque. The country's only Hindu temple is situated between the Grand Mosque and the Creek. Most Indian Families live in Bur Dubai. It is home to several popular places for tourists including renovated historic buildings and museums. The district has many shopping streets and souqs (or souk), including the textile souq near the abra boat station, though most of the well-known souqs are located in Deira. The Al Bastakiya historic area is located to the east of Al Fahidi Fort (now home to Dubai Museum) and features old courtyard housing which are identifiable with their wind towers. Shindagha to the northwest, located between Bur Dubai, the creek, and the sea is the historic location of the ruler's house on the peninsula facing the sea and the creek. Between 2013 and 2016, the Dubai Creek was extended back to the sea, turning Bur Dubai into an island. Bur Dubai is a popular living area consisting of several apartment buildings. The Dubai Metro Green Line goes through Bur Dubai connecting with the airport through Al Ghubaiba Metro Station & Union Metro Station. ■ MALL OF THE EMIRATES: Mall of the Emirates is a shopping mall in Dubai. Verdi Gillian Zammit Aguilar Mulholland Muscat Borg Wirth Malta Philharmonic Orchestra Istituto Italiano Cultura
Soprano Gillian Zammit brings to life the tribulations of Violetta in two contrasting scenes from 'La Traviata', one of the best-loved operatic scores. The Scena and Aria from Act 1 (“È strano…Sempre libera”) is set in the early hours of the morning, in the aftermath of a party Violetta has thrown. Alfredo Germont has declared his love, awakening new, strange feelings within her. Faced with the prospect of giving up her decadent life and sacrificing everything in the name of love, she allows herself to dream briefly of a future with Alfredo. Ultimately however, already knowing she is ill, she chooses to reject this path singing almost feverishly of pursuing a hedonistic, superficial life – despite Alfredo’s serenading (tenor: Luis Aguilar) from the streets below. The very reflective and pathetic Prelude to Act 3 leads directly into a most moving scene. Violetta is now terminally ill and alone. She has by now lost not only most of her possessions but hope itself. She reads a letter from Alfredo’s father informing her that her former lover will be returning to ask her forgiveness, but Violetta exclaims that it is now too late. She desperately reminiscences on a foregone past (“È tardi…Addio, del passato”), sharing her fears about her imminent death.
