Hungarian State Orchestra 0:00 : Evening in Transylvania. Lento rubato (F♯ minor) from 10 Easy Pieces No.5 Bear Dance. Allegro vivace (D major) from 10 Easy Pieces No.10 Melody. Andante (C♯ mixolydian) from 4 Dirges No.2 Slightly tipsy. Allegretto rubato (F minor) from For Children Book 1 No.40 Swineherd's dance. Allegro molto (A mixolydian) from Burlesques No.2
Also known as "Funeral Chants" and "Mourning Songs", in Hungarian "Négy siratóének." Apparently based on material Bartok collected in Romania. Some commentators note the influence of Debussy, particularly at the end of the 2nd song; this of course is preposterous. The 3rd song is noteworthy in that it is built solely on a melodic doubling at the octave and harmonized in open fifths. Mr Bartok was a highly disciplined composer! Created, edited and mastered in Digital Performer 5.13 (MOTU) using Ivory (Synthogy) sound libraries. johncasten.com
