From Cantabile-Subito Louise Kirkby Lunn "She was born in Manchester and studied with J.H. Greenwood, afterwards with Alberto Antonio Visetti in London. Further studies with the renowned Jacques Bouhy in Paris (Louise Homer was also a student of him). She made her early debut as Margaretha in Schumann’s Genoveva at the Drury Lane Theatre in London. Later she appeared in Délibes’ Le Roi l’a dit (!). She considered her real debut as Nora in Charles Standford’s opera Shamus O’Brien. She also sang at the Harris Opera Theatre and at the Carl Rosa Opera Company. From the very beginning she loved to sing on the concert platform. After her marriage in 1899 she had planned to terminate her career, but in 1901 she continued singing and signed a contract with Covent Garden. She was an important member at this famous opera house until 1914 (and again in the season 1921/22). She participated in some first opera performances: Massenet’s Hérodiade, Saint-Saëns’ Hélène and Gluck’s Armide. In 1902 she was invited to the Metropolitan where she debuted as Ortrud. Within the next two years she also sang Brangäne and Amneris. She toured America in 1904 where she was heard as Kundry (first performances of the opera in English) and this role was one of her greatest achievements. She created the role of Dalila in Saint-Saëns’ opera Samson et Dalila in the first English performance at Covent Garden. Despite her great success on stage she made many concert appearances and she became even more popular on the concert platform than in opera. She became THE great British oratorio contralto besides Dame Clara Butt. She was not only heard at the festivals of Birmingham, Sheffield and Norwich but also toured widely (USA, Australia and New Zealand). Her last opera appearance (as Amneris) took place in 1922 at Covent Garden. She continued to give concerts and recitals. Tenore francese Henri Alphonse Brin in arte - CHARLES DALMORÈS - (Nancy 21.12.1871 - Hollywood, Los Angeles 6.12.1939) Studia corno presso i Conservatori di Nancy e di Parigi, quindi suona con l'orchestra di Colonia per due anni e per altrettanto tempo con l'Orchestra Lamoureaux a Parigi. La sua voce è scoperta da Dauphin a Parigi, e in conseguenza prende lezioni da can to da Vergnet. Debutta nel 1899 con il nome di Charles Brin a Lione come Loge nel Das Rheingold di Wagner (in forma di concerto). Il debutto ufficiale in palcoscenico avviene all'Opéra di Rouen il 6 ottobre 1899 nel ruolo del titolo in Siegfried. Nel 1900 si lega al Théâtre de la Monnaie di Bruxelles, dove vi rimarrà fino al 1906 ottenendo grandi successi, tra l'altro canta nella prima esecuzione per Bruxelles di Götterdämmerung, 1901 (Siegfried), nella prima assoluta di Le Roi Arthus di E. Chausson il 30 novembre 1903 e nello stesso anno nella prima per Bruxelles di Tosca (Cavaradossi) al fianco di Claire Friché. Nel 1902 canta nella prima parigina Siegfried del Götterdämmerung al teatro Théâtre Château d'Eau. Continua gli studi con Franz Emmerich a Stoccarda. Nel 1904-1905 e poi nel 1909-1911 canta al Covent Garden di Londra, qui è interprete delle prime esecuzioni inglesi di Hérodiade (eseguita con il titolo di Salome) di Massenet, Hélène di Saint-Saëns, nelle prima assoluta di L'Oracolo di Franco Leoni il 28 giugno 1905. Tra il 1906 e il 1910 canta alla Manhattan Opera House New York, dove debutta il 7 dicembre 1906 in Faust, poi fu Don José in Carmen, Manrico nel Trovatore e Pelléas in Pelléas et Melisande. Qui canta nelle prime americane di Thaïs (Nicias) 1907, Sapho, (Jean Gaussin) 1909 (tre recite che hanno decretato il completo fallimento dell'opera) e Grisélidis (Alain), (1910) tutte di Massenet e in Louise di Charpentier (Julien). Tra il 1907-08 canta all'Opera di Colonia, Berlino, Vienna e Amburgo. Nel 1910 alla Hofoper di Berlino, al Stadttheater di Amburgo e al Hoftheater di Hannover. Nel 1908 canta Lohengrin al festival di Bayreuth. Tra il 1910 e il 1912 si lega alla società di Chicago-Philadelphia del New York Metropolitan Opera, e tra il 1913 e il 1918 fu ingaggiato come primo tenore dall'Opera di Chicago, dove ha cantato per la prima volta in Parsifal e Tristan und Isolde. Conclusa la carriera ha insegnato canto in Francia, ma poi è ritornato negli Stati Uniti, dove ha continuato a insegnare canto fino alla fine avvenuta a Hollywood nel 1939, aveva sessantotto anni. Tenore drammatico, dalla voce voluminosa e risonante fu ottimo musicista e buon attore.
