THE SONGBIRD: French soprano Renée Doria +••.••(...)) was born in Perpignan. Her operatic debut was Rosina in Marseille in 1942. This was followed by Konstanze in Cannes (conducted by Reynaldo Hahn) and all the Hoffmann heroines in Strasbourg. Her Paris debut in 1943 was Lakme and she took on Queen of the Night at the Paris Opera in 1947. Doria was one of the leading high sopranos there for many years with a primary focus on French roles (Leila, Mireille, Marguerite, Juliette, Ophélie, Manon, and Thaïs), with a few standard Italian roles such as Gilda and Violetta. I don't know the exact date on this, but I'd propose it was recorded in the 1970s. THE MUSIC: Mozart's "Don Giovanni" had its premiere in Prague in 1787. Donna Anna is one of three soprano roles. Her second aria "Non mi dir" has a multi-part structure beginning with a challenging accompanied recitative, followed by a gracefully melodic aria and a short florid conclusion. The role is often taken by dramatic voices as the music calls for bursts of outrage, but it was sung by high coloratura soprano Aloysia Weber in the Vienna premiere in 1788 under Mozart's direction.
