Prokofiev: String Quartet No. 1 in B Minor, Op. 50 The Stuyvesant String Quartet: Sylvan Shulman, violin I Harry Glickman, violin II Louis Kievman, viola Alan Shulman, cello Recorded January 15, 1941, in Liederkranz Hall, New York City, on Columbia 78-rpm matrices XCO 29694 through XCO 29699. Issued shortly thereafter as Columbia Masterworks Set M-448 (records 71042-D through 71044-D), and in automatic sequence as Set MM-448 (records 71045-D through 71047-D). At the time of issue, it was the only quartet Prokofiev had written; hence, the labels describe the work merely as "Quartet." Prokofiev's Quartet, Op. 50, was commissioned in 1930 by Mrs. Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge for the Library of Congress. It was first performed at that institution by the Roth Quartet on April 25, 1931, two days after the composer's fortieth birthday. It consists of three movements: 1. Allegro; Allegro moderato 2. Andante molto (at 8:16); Vivace (at 9:14) 3. Andante (at 15:02)
