Time for another two of the greatest stars of Swedish opera during the late 19th and early 20th century. Anna Dorothea Oscàr-Hellström (nee Thulin) +••.••(...)) and Oscar Bergström +••.••(...)). Today though, they are quite forgotten and the ironic thing is that Oscar Bergström is today most known for something he did not do. When the first Swedish recordings made by the Gramophone Company were found years ago, they contained recordings made in October 1899 by "Bergströms Terzett" and "Bergströms Duo", and these recordings were almost immediately after the discovery connected to Oscar Bergström, so many books and webpages state that Oscar Bergström sang on the first Swedish gramophone record. Well, he did record very early (as early as December 1899 when he recorded "Porterlied" from von Flotow's "Martha" and many other songs), but the above-mentioned recordings by "Bergströms Terzett" and "Bergströms Duo" had nothing to do with Oscar Bergström. This could have been made clear long ago, since it is obvious that those old recordings are made by female singers. Since Oscar Bergström was a bass-baritone, it's today obvious that the assumed connection was false. The reason why the erroneous connection has been long-lived is of course that not that many had heard the above mentioned recording, but since they have been available on CD ("Gramophone 1899" Sterling 1700-1-2) since 2006, the myth ought to be dead by now ... but as I said, it's quite long-lived. The female singer is credited Anna Oscàr on the label but her name when this recording was made in March 1903 at Hotel Rydberg in Stockholm, was Anna Hellström. Since she later had married the opera singer Martin Oscàr when this record was reissued her surname had changed on the label. Just as with the John Forsell record I presented here some months ago, this recording starts with an announcer stating that it is a record made by the Gramophone company by saying "Sjunget i gramophone" / just to make sure nobody would paste over the label and sell it. Illegal records existed back then too.
