Renaud Vilbac Lefébure Lefébure Wély Gabriel Fauré Saint Saens Dubois Dallier Mignan 1829 1855 1871 1884 2018
Renaud de Vilbac +••.••(...)) was a composer, organist and teacher working in Paris in the mid-nineteenth century. From 1855 to 1871, he was organist at the Parisian church of St. Eugène, a Gothic Revival gem in the 9th Arrondissement. This Petite Sortie (short postlude) is from his volume of church music for harmonium entitled “L’Intituteur Organiste.” The instrument is a handsome Alexandre Père et Fils harmonium (their No. 56073), built in Paris and still in use in the church of La Madeleine in Paris. It has a rosewood case, ivory keyboard, four stops in the bass and six stops in the treble; it has been described to me as "Lefébure-Wély's harmonium" and "Gabriel Fauré's harmonium." These and other former titular organists of La Madeleine (Saint-Saens, Dubois, Dallier and Mignan) may have played it and composed on it. Many thanks to the staff at La Madeleine for their warm reception, and for letting me play this fine instrument. Performed by Michael Hendron; recorded 28 September 2018.

Nous sommes à Paris! This Sortie Solennelle (tempo marking: Très majestueux) is taken from L'Instituteur Organiste by Renaud de Vilbac +••.••(...)). Vilbac was organist at the Parisian church of St. Eugène from 1855 (when the church was dedicated) to 1871. The harmonium was built in Paris by Alexandre Père et Fils (their No. 56073), with a handsome rosewood case, ivory keyboard, four stops in the bass and six stops in the treble. It stands in the church of La Madeleine, also in Paris, where it has been described to me as "Lefébure-Wély's harmonium" and "Gabriel Fauré's harmonium." These and other former titular organists of La Madeleine (Saint-Saens, Dubois, Dallier and Mignan) may have played it and composed on it, using the old (and still comfortable) upholstered bench. Many thanks to the staff at La Madeleine for their friendly reception and for letting me play this fine instrument. Performed by Michael Hendron, recorded 6 April 2010.
Charles Renaud Vilbac 1829 1844
The French composer and organist Alphonse- Zoe-Charles Renaud de Vilbac +••.••(...)) went to the Paris Conservatoire at 13 and was a second prizewinner in the 1844 Prix de Rome. He is best known today as an arranger of operatic extracts for piano and harmonium, piano and violin and other combinations. However, he also wrote light operas and a few piano works. The set of studies from which this piece comes formed the final part of a piano method published c1873 - which included 100 studies for two hands and 50 studies for piano duet! This piece is an attractive evocation of a stream, and the straightforward layout is enlivened by some subtle harmonies. My thumbnail includes a photo from 1897 by Benoît de Tyskiewicz of peasants fishing in a stream in Wiala (I'm not sure where that was). / / Played by Phillip Sear (http•••) (Email: •••@••• WhatsApp: (http•••) )
