Wilhelm Friedemann Bach: Polonoise (polonaise) in F minor, BR A 36, F.12. As the eldest son of J.S. Bach, Wilhelm Friedemann inherited the mantle of supreme organist of his day. He is also the only one of Bach's son for whom there are eye-witness accounts of his performances at the organ, clavichord, harpsichord, and fortepiano. Much of his playing was, as was usual until the last century, improvised. Friedemann Bach's performance on the clavichord was noted at the time for its extraordinary "delicatesse". Though prepared for publication by c.1765, the Twelve Polonaises (or "Polonoisen" as they were called at the time) were described in 1819 by Forkel's pupil F.C. Griepenkerl as "the purest and truest expression of a noble, tender and greatly agitated spirit" in his introduction to the first printed edition of the works (C.F. Peters, Leipzig). The introduction explains how to make the pianoforte imitate, as far as it can, the sound of the clavichord. Griepenkerl may have been the original authenticist, as he gives further directives concerning the performance of ornaments and tempo as Friedemann Bach was said to have played them, thus showing these works to be a long way from the original dance. The first edition is also replete with marks of expression, which Friedemann's biographer Martin Falck identified as being a faithful reproduction of the composer's fair copy prior to its disappearance during World War II; it has recently been rediscovered. The distinguished Viennese pianist Julius Epstein, a friend of Brahms', declared these works among "the most beautiful keyboard compositions of all times". It is a measure of how harpsichord-oriented - not to mention puritanical - the HIP movement remains that these works should be published expurgated of their expression marks when many keyboard works of the time have a similar amount of expression marks. A reappraisal is called for in the context of Friedemann's contemporaries, rather than merely as harpsichord composer of the lesser-known Bach son with romantic and wayward tendencies. His pupil Rust relates how his teacher would show him how to treat a subject on the organ at the main church in Halle before taking him the short walk to his home by the river where he would develop the theme differently on the "Clavier". In all probability this was a fine clavichord such as those possessed, and indeed built, by other members of the Bach clan. Neil Coleman - Pantaleon clavichord by Ambrosius Pfaff (2016) after attrib. C.E. Friederici, c.1770. Pitch: a' = 415 Hz. Keyboard temperament: Neidhardt, "Gross Stadt" (1724). Prepared by Miles Hellon. With special thanks to Jorge Navarro Colorado and Ambrosius Pfaff.
