Beethoven Sonnleithner Pierre Gaveaux Paulin Pizarro Ryan Brown Starr Opera Lafayette 1804 1805 1806 1814 2020
Opera in three acts (first version, 1805) Libretto by Joseph Sonnleithner after “Léonore, ou L’Amour conjugal” by Jean-Nicolas Bouilly Beethoven started composing Leonore in January 1804. The subject – the release to freedom of an unjustly imprisoned man by his devoted wife – was part of the genre of ‘rescue operas’ which were very popular at the end of the 18th century. The premiere of Leonore, given before an uncomprehending audience at a time of political upheaval, was a failure and Beethoven responded by shortening the work from three acts to two, which was the version performed in 1806. After further revisions it was to emerge in 1814 as Fidelio. Unique to this performance is the world premiere of Florestan’s lost original Act III aria reconstructed by the musicologist Will Crutchfield, using Beethoven’s original scene sketches and what remains of the original score. This 2020 staging formed part of Opera Lafayette’s Leonore Project which included a performance of Pierre Gaveaux’s Léonore, ou L’Amour conjugal (available on Naxos DVD 2.110591 and Blu-ray NBD0085V), on which Beethoven modelled his Leonore. Bergen National Opera has created a special musical Christmas Card this year, presented by the young quartet FirStemt, Edvard Grieg Kor and soprano Elisabeth Teige. If ever we've needed music, sparkle and fun, it's this Christmas! So Bergen National Opera has created a special musical Christmas Card. And to present it, we have recruited Firstemt – four fantastic young singers who have grown up through BNO and Edvard Grieg Kor's Unge Stemmer programme. They have all finished their studies overseas, and have formed a festive quartet: they will sing to us, and introduce us to a gorgeous short programme of Christmas music. We'll be joined by Edvard Grieg Kor, and we'll welcome back to BNO star Norwegian soprano Elisabeth Teige. Open a bottle of bubbles, put on your Santa hat, and open our Christmas Card. You can even sing along. God Jul from us all. And here's to great opera in 2021. PROGRAM Ding! Dong! More than a decade after it went off the air after two critically-acclaimed seasons, Party Down is returning to Starz. The cable network announced on Thursday that they are developing a six-episode limited series revival.Original creators Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), John Enbom (Free Agents) and Dan Etheridge (iZombie) are returning to develop the series. The original series followed a group of six friends - Ken Marino, Adam Scott, Ryan Hansen, Martin Starr, Lizzy Caplan and Megan Mullally - who move to Los Angeles to become actors and end up working at a catering company. Each episode finds the Party Down catering crew working at a different event as they try to sort out their own lives in the process, with the cast rounded out by Jane Lynch and Jennifer Coolidge. The show lasted just two seasons on Starz, with Adam Scott leaving after the first season due to his commitments to Parks and Recreation, and Jane Lynch leaving due to Glee commitments. The cast also included J.K. Simmons, Joey Lauren Adams, Ken Jeong, Kristen Bell and June Diane-Raphael in recurring roles.'Before the cast of Party Down became well-known television and movie actors and award winners, they were all wearing the same pink bowties as part of a less than competent team of Los Angeles cater-waiters while chasing their dreams of stardom on the STARZ series,' said Christina Davis, President of Original Programming for Starz. 'Fans have been waiting more than 10 years for this revival to happen and we're thrilled to be in development with Rob, Paul, Dan and John at the helm,' Davis added. While the show was adored by critics and its devoted fan base, the show struggled in the ratings and was canceled after two seasons. Series co-creator Rob Thomas reveals the idea for a revival was hatched during a reunion back in 2019.'At the end of 2019, the 'Party Down' cast and producers were all reunited at a retrospective for the show hosted by Vulture,' Thomas said. 'We had such a good time that we wanted to find a way to get the team back together again,' he added.'The cast is so busy these days that finding a window where we can do it may require trigonometry, but we're determined to make it happen,' he concluded.Executive Vice President of Original Programming Karen Bailey is the executive overseeing Party Down on behalf of Starz.
