Beethovenfest Bonn Beethoven Rellstab 1801 1832 2016 2020
"Mondscheinsonate" (Moonlight Sonata), the Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor "Quasi una fantasia", Op. 27, No. 2 is one of the most popular compositions by Ludwig van Beethoven, who played a significant role in the transition between the classical and romantic eras of classical music.. This sonata was composed in 1801, and premiered by the composer himself in the following year [1]. At that time, Beethoven was living in Vienna, and his hearing was gradually deteriorating. The name "Mondscheinsonate" was actually given by the German music critic and poet Ludwig Rellstab in 1832 in a review, in which he associated the first movement with the moonlight shining upon Lake Lucerne in Switzerland [2]. This year is Beethoven's 250th birthday, and the city Bonn was set to celebrate the festival by several concerts. Due to the spread of Coronavirus disease, there is a temporary social contact ban enacted by the German government. Hence, this small concert is held without any human in the concert hall. Hopefully the audience can still enjoy the beautiful music by Beethoven as well as find tranquility and inner peace. Let us appreciate the moonlight and wait for the warm sun. Following the Second World War, the Red Army and the Allies came across a huge number of concentration and extermination camps set up within Nazi-occupied territory. With each camp that was liberated, the liberators found a huge number of suffering people and the true crimes of the Third Reich. Camps such as Auschwitz and Bergen Belsen told the true horrors of the Holocaust, however there were many more large camps used by the SS. One such camp was a womens camp, Ravensbruck which was found around 50 miles north of Berlin, Hitler's capital. Fritz Suhren was the Commandant of Ravensbruck and he instigated a reign of terror over the camp. Under his control, thousands of women and prisoners were murdered and killed in the horrible conditions inside of the complex. He was known for being a man who instilled strict discipline and punishment, and he was experienced in the system having also worked at Sachsenhausen as the deputy commandant. Suhren reigned over with an iron fist, and did not tolerate any misdemeanours from the inmates, and he also allowed the horrific experiments to take place within his camp. Eventually as World War 2 was coming to an end, Fritz Suhren was captured however he did manage to escape a number of times. He was finally placed on trial and sentenced to death 5 years after the war finished. He was executed by a French firing squad.
