Hing Yee City Opera Vancouver 1961 2022
Vancouver's Chinatown, 1961. Eugene is 20 years old. Born in China, his family sent him to Vancouver as a "paper son", hoping he would find a better life. ("Paper son" refers to Chinese people who immigrated illegally to Canada, circumventing racist, exclusionary laws, utilizing documents stating they were blood relatives of Chinese Canadians.) In this aria, Eugene has discovered poignantly significant artifacts hidden in the wall of the Hing Mee building, about to be demolished. CHINATOWN is a new opera from City Opera Vancouver, by Madeleine Thien, Alice Ping Yee Ho and Paul Yee. It will see its world premiere at the Vancouver Playhouse in September 2022. It is a story of family and neighbourhood, racism and resistance, history and tomorrow. In two acts and two hours it examines six characters, two families, and a chorus of male ghosts, from the building of the CPR through to our own times. It deals with violence and despair, the Head Tax, the Exclusion Act, paper sons, and paper promise. The inspiration for CHINATOWN lies in our history, a great neighbourhood and its people, and its resistance against racism – both historical, and resurgent today.
Hermann Zilcher Nicholson Mund Hing Frühling Haupt
English "Early Walk" by Detlev von Liliencron We wander through the silent night, The tamtam has faded out, You nuzzle at my breast, I hold you embracingly. And where the dark Ypres are standing, Earnest as a black scaffolding, There I found your little mouth, The red pearled coast. And slowly we went further, Who knows where we went. A light-blue bang hung in the morning, The day had begun. Around Easter it was, the spring will Dethrone the last frost, You picked a wreath for me Of white wildflowers. You laid it on my brow, The sun began to rise and traced blindingly around your head a tiara. You leant on my arm, Wir dreamt immeasurably. The people in their noisey world, We had forgotten them.
