This etude is the first time we see the articulations that we worked on in No. 2 in a sixteenth note pattern. This is also the first etude to suggest variations in the pattern of articulations, all of which I adopt here (as written and the first two patterns for the first half, the 3rd and 4th patterns for the second half). It's very important to work on all of them, since it's these patterns that help the tongue develop the agility it needs to do more complex and intricate work later on. And it’s ALWAYS important to play with clear half- and whole- steps in scales — something often overlooked in developing one’s technique on the trombone, and particularly in faster playing.
Kopprasch Etude No. 9 for Trombone: with this one, I use the various articulation patterns. Of course, this means additional challenges with playing each half three times rather than two! But the effort is worth it, especially when working to develop not only competency, but fluency, with these various slur and tongued notes.
