Catacoustic Consort Marin Marais Pappano Unger Morales 1711 1736 2018
Agréable Solitude from The Ursuline Manuscript Melissa Harvey (soprano), Kim Pineda (flute), Annalisa Pappano (bass viola da gamba), Michael Unger (harpsichord) Concert May 2018 at Christ Church Cathedral, Cincinnati The Ursuline Sisters of New Orleans have an unmatched legacy in their legacy of girls. Less well-known are their contributions to music. In this concert Catacoustic performed music from the New Orleans "Ursuline Manuscript," entitled Nouvelles Poésies Spirituelles et Morales. It was originally copied in Paris in 1736 and brought to the New Orleans convent and consists primarily of sacred, non-liturgical parodies made from well-known vernacular vocal and instrumental music. This piece Agréable Solitude is a historical arrangement of a viola da gamba solo by Marin Marais: La Musette from Suite #7, Pièces de Viole, IIIme Livre (1711). For more information on this music, visit Dr. Kim Pineda's website at (http•••). Translation (by Dr. Kim Pineda): Pleasant solitude You will make all my pleasures. Through the charm of learning, You suspend my sighs. You calm the anxiety Of the saddest memories. Pleasant solitude, You will make all my pleasures. To your sweet leisure I confine all my desires. Pleasant solitude You will make all my pleasures.

Text: Weep, eyes, weep. O my eyes, you who have shed torrents of tears, for two beautiful, burning eyes, pour forth now hot rivers for that heavenly Maker who created those beautiful eyes. You, who have had little or no pity for the weeping of those who do not care or believe, ah, pour out now a flood of tears for that Maker who turns love into true love, grief into joy; you, my eyes, who have wept so much, why are you now tired and dry? Weep, eyes, weep. While he who gave me life, and was made mortal for me, now languishes in death, so covered with blood, my eyes, are you now too miserly to shed two little tears? Weep, eyes, weep.
