Stradella Moro Chantal Santon Jeffery Jeffery Galilei Rebel Galilei Consort 2017
Release date → September 2017 Pre-order → (http•••) More info: (http•••) The life of Stradella, murdered on a Genoese piazza at the age of forty-two on the orders of a jealous rival in love, has achieved mythical status and inspired several novels and operas featuring Stradella the adventurer, the rebel and above all Stradella the Don Juan, whose amorous escapades, from abducting a novice from a convent in Florence to a flight across Italy with the high-born fiancée of a senator, were never a hindrance to his flourishing musical career. It is easy to imagine that Stradella’s hectic life provided the inspiration for the captivating female figures who abound in his output, exalted by technically redoubtable vocal writing, as exuberant and virtuosic as it can sometimes be sober and ethereal, and supported by remarkably skilled recitatives, a genuine verbal theatre that offers the singer infinite scope for expression. From the demonic Salome to Ariadne, the model wife turned into a Fury by despair; from Pelagia, the repentant sinner who ends her days living in a cave disguised as a man, to Susanna, the very image of innocence and purity, this programme presents a series of portraits of women whom Chantal Santon embodies in their turn with all her artistry, her intimate knowledge of this repertory and her sense of theatre.

Da chi spero aita, o Cieli from the oratorio La Susanna by Alessandro Stradella +••.••(...)) Chantal Santon Jeffery, soprano Galilei Consort Benjamin Chénier, conductor Da chi spero aita, o Cieli, Se crudeli mi son gli amanti? From whom may I hope for aid, O Heavens, If those who love me are cruel to me? My tears will not be believed, If, with new cruelty, My beauty convicts me of a crime. Alas, woe is me, why do I tremble, What do I fear, when I am chaste? That will not suffice to free me, If, with new cruelty, My beauty condemns me to die. CD available from Alpha: (http•••) Various artists’ depictions of Susanna: [0:45] Sebastiano Ricci +••.••(...)) In 1638 Louis-Dieudonné, destined to become King of France under the name of Louis XIV, was born at last. Louis XIII instructed his ambassadors to celebrate the event with pomp and circumstance. In Venice, whose commercial vitality gave it a dominant role in Europe, four days of festivities were organised in honour of the French Dauphin, culminating in the performance at San Giorgio Maggiore of a solemn mass specially composed by Giovanni Rovetta, Monteverdi’s deputy maestro di cappella at San Marco, who was to succeed him in 1644 and become one of the leading musicians in Venice. That mass, never sung again since its first performance, was reconstructed by Benjamin Chénier in 2015 for the tercentenary of the death of Louis XIV. It is a grandiose, typically Venetian work, with all the splendour appropriate to the spirit of La Serenissima Repubblica. The Galilei Consort, founded by the violinist Benjamin Chénier, is principally dedicated to the reconstruction of musical practices and works of seventeenth-century Italy. Such practices emerged from the humanist movement, and are personified by Vincenzo Galilei, father of the famous Galileo, who advocated a return to the Greek conception of music with primary importance accorded to the meaning of the text.
