A reading including commentary on my translation of the viking saga collection Heimskringla. This is the second part of Halfdan the Black's Saga, which is the second saga of Heimskringla, and the first of the king sagas proper. 00:00 Introduction 01:16 Strife between Halfdan and the Gandalfssons 04:25 Halfdan's later marriage, where he married Ragnhild, daughter of Sigurd Hjort 11:42 Comments on the geography of Hake Bersek's homestead and Hárek Sorcerer's attack 21:36 Comments on Hake's suicide In this part we learn Halfdan the Black is first outnumbered and outgunned in battle by the Gandalfssons Helsing and Hysing, before he returns to defeat them in battle. We also hear of Hake Hadelands-berserkers murder of Sigurd Hjort, the great grandson of Ragnar Lodbrok and Halfdan the Black's prospective father in law. Halfdan the Black then orders Hárek Sorcerer to lead his men to avenge Sigurd Hjort's murder and bring back his children who have been kidnapped by Hake Berserk. I also go into some detail concerning the geography and localities of Hake Berserk and the attach on his homestead. I have a lifelong interest in Nordic history, language and dialects. I think this will bring a lot of interesting commentary to the sagas that especially non-Scandinavians can find interesting and helpful in appreciating the saga literature.
