Richard Wagner Jun Märkl Heinrich Dorn Robert Schumann Beethoven Weber Mdr Sinfonieorchester 1831 1832
MDR Sinfonieorchester conducted by Jun Märkl I - Allegro con brio - Più allegro: 0:00 In the years before Richard Wagner established himself as a leading composer and polemicist of the so-called New German School, he worked on a number of symphonic, stage and even operatic projects which are now seldom heard in the concert hall or theatre. Wagner showed an early talent for poetry and story writing; and at 15 years old, he also began musical training in Leipzig with the local musician Christian Gottlieb Muller. After three years of basic training in harmony and counterpoint, Wagner began studies with Christian Theodor Weinlig, the Leipzig Thomaskantor, and Heinrich Dorn, the Kapellmeister of the Leipzig Court Theatre (who was also teaching a young and rather wayward Robert Schumann at around the same time). The earliest works on this recording date from the time of Wagner’s training with these men, in the early 1830s: the two Concert Overtures, and the overture to König Enzio. All three works were copied out and bound together in a single volume (and in revised versions, probably adjusted as a result of lessons learned from first performances), dating from 1832. The Concert Overture No.1 in D minor (Overture No.1 in D minor) was composed between late summer and autumn 1831, about six months after Wagner had enrolled at Leipzig University to study music. It is a highly dramatic work, and although Beethoven’s influence is in evidence throughout, its classical structuring and orchestral voicing, in particular, the prominence given to high winds and horns, also points to Carl Maria von Weber as a likely model. The piece was premiered on Christmas Day of 1831 in Leipzig, when it was probably conducted by Wagner’s new teacher, Heinrich Dorn.
