Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina: Victimae paschali laudes The Cardinall's Musick Andrew Carwood Score: www.cpdl.org (Pothárn Imre) Performed a whole tone below written pitch. Victimae paschali laudes immolent Christiani Agnus redemit oves: Christus innocens Patri reconciliavit peccatores. Mors et vita duello conflixere mirando, Dux vitae mortuus, regnat vivus. Dic nobis Maria, quid vidisti in via? Sepulcrum Christi viventis, et gloriam vidi resurgentis: Angelicos testes, sudarium et vestes. Surrexit Christus spes mea: praecedet suos in Galilaeam. Scimus Christum surrexisse a mortuis vere: Tu nobis, victor Rex, miserere. Amen. Alleluia. / ENGLISH / To the Paschal victim let Christians offer up their songs of praise. The Lamb has redeemed the sheep: Christ who is without sin has reconciled sinners to the Father. Death and life have fought a huge battle; The Prince of Life was dead, but lives and reigns. Tell us, Mary, what did you see on your way? The tomb of Christ, who is alive, and I saw the glory of his rising; Christ my hope has risen: He has gone to Galilee before you. Truly, we know Christ has risen from the dead: O King and victor, have mercy on us. Amen. Alleluia. / MAGYAR / Húsvét tiszta áldozatját a hívek áldva áldják.
Gaetano Donizetti Campana Anna Bolena Vincenzo Salvatore Carmelo Francesco Bellini Francesco Florimo Gioacchino Rossini Christiani Dux 1797 1801 1835 1848
Testo: “1. Victimæ paschali laudes immolent Christiani. 2. Agnus redemit oves: Christus innocens Patri reconciliavit peccatores. 2a. Mors et Vita duello conflixere mirando: dux vitæ mortuus, regnat vivus. 3. Dic nobis, Maria, quid vidisti in via? 3a. Sepulcrum Christi viventis, et gloriam vidi resurgentis, 4. Angelicos testes, sudarium et vestes. 4a. Surrexit Christus spes mea: praecedet suos in Galilaeam. 5. Indice del video: 0:08 prima Ave Maria 0:50 seconda Ave Maria 1:46 terza Ave Maria 2:59 quarta Ave Maria 3:43 quinta Ave Maria 4:35 Inno “Victimae Paschali Laudes” 6:00 Finale inno Buon ascolto e buona visione!
Philippe Verdelot Santa Maria Fiore Josquin Prez Tucker Christiani Dux Lamb Mercy 1480 1515 1540 1570
Victimae Paschali Laudes, an Easter sequence, was written by Philippe Verdelot who lived from about 1480 to 1540. Although born and raised in France, it appears that Verdelot later established himself as a musician in Italy, specifically in Florence as the maestro di cappella at the baptistry of Santa Maria del Fiore. Not much is known about Verdelot's sacred compositions, though several motets and masses are attributed to him. His secular works, known as madrigals, seem to be his most famous compositions currently among musicologists. Verdelot is known to have written several pieces for, and collaborated with Niccolò Machiavelli; these pieces that Verdelot wrote for Machiavelli are considered to be the earliest madrigals. This sacred piece, however, is remarkably beautiful and we are very excited to share it with you. The further development of compositional techniques such as the use of cantus firmus and imitative counterpoint in the early Renaissance is often attributed to Josquin des Prez, and rightfully so. However, by listening to Verdelot’s Victimae Paschali (written c. 1515), we realize that he also had an important role in developing those techniques at the beginning of the XVI century, leading the way into the High Renaissance alongside Josquin. Although this piece may not be as easy to listen to as compositions of the High Renaissance, one should put in the effort because not only are there beautiful and haunting harmonies woven throughout, but also it is important to understand the very origins of many of the musical techniques that composers would utilize and make famous 50 years later. We particularly wish to draw the listener's attention to the line credendum est magis soli Mariae veraci quam iudeorum turbe fallaci. This line probably sounds foreign to many of our listeners because it does not appear in the Victimae Paschali Laudes that we sing today. It is believed to have been removed by the Council of Trent as, starting with the release of the Missale Romanum in 1570, that line no longer appeared. If you look at the translation of the line (found below), one can posit a plausible theory as to why the line may have been removed. Translation: Verse 1 Christians! to the Paschal Victim offer your thankful praises. The Lamb the sheep redeemeth: Christ, Who only is sinless, reconcileth sinners to the Father. Death and life contended in that conflict stupendous: the Prince of Life, Who died, deathless reigneth. Speak, Mary, declaring what thou sawest wayfaring. Verse 2 “The tomb of Christ Who now liveth: and likewise the glory of the Risen. Bright Angels attesting, the shroud and napkin resting. Yea, Christ my hope is arisen: to Galilee He goeth before you." Happy they who bear the witness Mary's word believing above the tales of Jewry deceiving, We know that Christ is risen, henceforth ever living: Have mercy, Victor King, pardon giving. Amen. Alleluia.
