"Danny Boy" is a ballad written by English songwriter Frederic Weatherly and usually set to the Irish tune of the "Londonderry Air". It is most closely associated with Irish communities. Jane Ross of Limavady is credited with collecting the melody of "Londonderry Air" in the mid-19th century from a musician she encountered. "Danny Boy" is considered to be an unofficial signature song and anthem, particularly by Irish Americans and Irish Canadians.

This is the latest release for David Hobson, in a long line of successful albums including many opera arias on "Handel Arias" album; - "French and Italian Arias"; - and other albums including his "Presenting David Hobson"; - "The Exquisite Hour"; - "Cinema Paradiso"; - "A Little Closure"; - "The Promise"; - "One Perfect Day" (Soundtrack) 2CD; - and finally "The Live Album". I purchased this from my ABC store. I have not heard anyone sing "Danny Boy" as passionately and with boundless conviction, as presented here by David Hobson: - all of the ballads and odes performed by David Hobson are exceptional. I would recommened all of the above albums as comfortable additions to your music collection: you will be trapped in the spell of his vocal line. I was, and I am constantly listening to his performances. Background The lyrics to "Danny Boy" were written by the English lawyer and lyricist Frederick Weatherly in 1910. Although the lyrics were originally written for a different tune, Weatherly modified them to fit "Londonderry Air" in 1913 when his sister-in-law in America sent him a copy.[1] Ernestine Schumann-Heink made the first recording in 1915. Weatherly gave the song to the vocalist Elsie Griffin, who in turn made it one of the most popular songs in the new century. In 1928, Weatherly suggested that the second verse would provide a fitting requiem for the actress Ellen Terry. "Danny Boy" was originally said to be intended as a message from a woman to a man, and Weatherly provided the alternative "Eily dear" for male singers in his 1918 authorised lyrics.[2] However, the song is actually sung by men as much as, or possibly more than, women. The song has been interpreted by some listeners as a message from a parent to a son going off to war or leaving as part of the Irish diaspora. The song is widely considered an Irish anthem, although Weatherly was an Englishman. Nonetheless, "Danny Boy" is considered by many Irish Americans and Irish Canadians to be their unofficial signature song (http•••) Oh Danny boy, the pipes the pipes are calling From glen to glen and down the mountain side The summer's gone and all the roses falling 'Tis you 'Tis you must go and I must bide But come me back when summer's in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow 'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy I love you so. But when ye come and all the flow'rs are dying If I am dead, as dead I well may be Ye'll come and find the place where I am lying And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me. And I shall hear tho' soft you tread above me And all my grave will warmer sweeter be For you will bend and tell me that you Love me And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.
