(Aria from the Merchant from Smyrna) Bekende zangwijze. (How beautiful is it, to do good deeds and to relieve the distressed of pain. What a priceless blessing do we taste, when we make others happy? A good deed, accomplished with joy, gives us the greatest bliss.) 't Geluk geeft mij mijnen DORVAL weder, En hem den besten boezemvriend, De Turk bemint den Christen teeder, Als hen de deugd aan één verbindt, Een brave daad, enz. (Happiness gives me back my Dorval and, with him, my best friend. The Turk loves the Christian tenderly, if virtue unites them. A good deed, etc.) d' Erkent'nis zien w' in alle Landen wonen ; Bij Wilden zelfs wordt zij geacht, Wat heil ook ik deez' dag mogt toonen, Dat HASSAN ook zijn' plicht betracht, Een brave daad, enz. (The gratitude has been seen in all countries and is deemed by the savages. Whatever salvation this day may bring, Hassan also exercised his duty. A good deed, etc.) (To live as wife in Hassan's arms - to give back the friend who saved him from pain, a beloved person - is the finest lust to my heart. A good deed, etc.) (Art thou all not born from one sole tribe? Did not one father give birth to thee? Oh man, try to be a humane being. This is what nature bids thee. A good deed, accomplished with joy, gives us the greatest bliss.) Like all vocal music of this era, this aria illustrates the message, oriented on civic virtue, of the moderate Dutch Enlightenment and the closely connected positive attitude towards mankind.
