Johann Valentin Meder Johann Mattheson Johann Sebastian Bach Kubiak 1649 1689 1719 2017
Johann Valentin Meder +••.••(...)), born in Central Germany, was active in North-Eastern Europe: Copenhagen, Lübeck, Riga, Tallinn, Gdansk, Königsberg (now Kaliningrad). According to the influential opinion of the German diplomat and musician Johann Mattheson, Meder would have become the director of the Swedish musical court had it not been for the Great Northern War. During his time, there was a flourishing of musical compositions in which sound effects were used in order to create vignettes set in different contexts, including Poland. His sonata "The Polish beggar", in fact, has speculated to contain not only allusions to Polish itinerant musicians but also even the influence of klezmer music. As we read in the imaginative title provided by the same composer, the scene is set with a beggar playing a typical string instrument, and accompanied by a young singer boy. The plucked passages might represent the former, while the chorale episodes probably depict the boy singing a psalm-like melody. The baroque interpolations act as lively dance interludes, almost like in a suite.
