Lone Koppel Elizabeth Fretwell Leoš Janáček Charles Mackerras Stevens Opera Australia 1976
The operas of Leoš Janáček were introduced to the repertory of Opera Australia in the mid-1970s - by conductors Edward Downes and, later, Charles Mackerras. From a revival of JENŮFA, we hear the dramatic final scene where the Kostelnička reveals that she has killed her own grandchild. This excerpt features the wonderful Danish soprano Lone Koppel in the title role, Elizabeth Fretwell as the Kostelnička (many agree that her performance in this role has never been bettered in Australia) and Ronald Stevens as Laca. The conductor in this performance from 1976 is Charles Mackerras.

Edderkoppespind, sølvertråde i mit sind, snører hjertet ind, tvivl om dig gør mig blind, lær mig Gud at få ro, i dit håb at finde tro. Så som en delfin solfyldt bølge bliver min, leg, der varer ved, ventende kærlighed. Tekst: Kathrine Lilleør (2017) Optaget i Sankt Pauls kirke, København, maj 2020. The excellent Danish soprano, Lone Koppel, was a regular guest with Opera Australia from her debut in 1973 to her final appearance there in 1997. Her roles with the national company included Tosca, Salome, Venus, Jenny in THE RISE & FALL OF THE CITY OF MAHAGONNY, Jenufa and the Kostelnicka, the Composer in ARIADNE ON NAXOS, Marie in WOZZECK, Abigaille, Senta, Micaela, Donna Elvira, Ortrud and Madame de Croissy in DIALOGUES OF THE CARMELITES. She is captured here in Donna Elvira's entrance (her only Mozart role in Australia) with James Morris in the title role and Neil Warren-Smith as Leporello. We hear her from "Ah, chi mi dice mai quel barbaro dov'è?" through to the end of Leporello's 'Catalogue Aria' - "Madamina, il catalogo è questo delle belle, che amò il padron mio". This performance from the Sydney Opera House on August 5th 1978 was conducted by Richard Bonynge.
