An Invitation and a Blessing — Samuel Adler Los Angeles Zimriyah Chorale Nick Strimple, Conductor As we have for Joey’s older siblings, we commissioned composer Samuel Adler to create a new work for Joey’s Bar Mitzvah. “It was a pleasure for me to write the third piece in the ‘Schoenberg Bar/Bat Mitzvah’ series,” Adler wrote. “This time a choral piece based partially on Joey’s love of cooking, therefore the traditional invitation to ‘dine with us if you are hungry’ from the Haggadah, and the Priestly Benediction in the Parasha of his Bar Mitzvah Shabbat (Bamidbar/Numbers). The short work is for four-part mixed chorus and piano, but the benediction can be sung a cappella. I wish Joey and the entire family a most joyous and blessed event and have felt privileged to be included in these festivities.” Samuel Adler was born in 1928 in Mannheim, Germany and came to the United States in 1939. He was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in May 2001, and then inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in October 2008. He is the composer of over 400 published works, including 5 operas, 6 symphonies, 12 concerti, 8 string quartets, 4 oratorios and many other orchestral, band, chamber and choral works and songs, which have been performed all over the world. He is Professor emeritus at the Eastman School of Music where he taught from 1966 to 1995 and served as chair of the composition department from 1974 until his retirement.
