Nicola Lefanu Raschèr Groves John Edward Kelly Weinberger Raschèr Saxophone Quartet 1985
Nicola LeFanu's saxophone quartet Moon Over the Western Ridge, Mootwingee is not only written for the Raschèr Quartet, but, to a certain extent, also about this ensemble and its four players. The members of this quartet can verify what uncanny insight the composer has brought into both the "solo-portraits" tucked within the work and the special and varied ensemble sections. And, of course, the technical demands of the music have been made with full knowledge of the players for whom the work was composed. But equally important is the profound influence of Nature, who has left her mark on all details of this music. Even the quarter-tones appear as a most natural expression, sometimes as an organic "extension" of existing harmonic language in the sense of Alois Haba - a sonority slightly distorted as though heard at great distance, sometimes as a kind of melodic "tumbleweed", a bit "windblown" in rapid passages. Nicola LeFanu has offered the following comments about Moon Over the Western Ridge, Mootwingee: "This quartet was written in Sydney, just after I had returned from a month in the outback country of Western New South Wales. Perhaps the listener will discern in the music some of the images I brought back from that trip: great distances, great quiet; ancient trees standing in the white sand of a dry creek bed; groves of golden wattle, alive with birds; grey-green desert as far as the eye can see, broken by ranges of craggy hills; shapes ever-changing, in the shimmer of midday heat or the shadowy world of a moonlit night." The work, which is dedicated to the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet, was premièred November 6th, 1985 in Stuttgart. The performers on this recording are Carina Raschèr - Soprano, John Edward-Kelly - Alto, Bruce Weinberger - Tenor and Linda Bangs-Urban - Baritone.
