Franjo Dugan Bourdon 1874 1881 1892 1898 1931 1932 1944 1948 2018
Franjo Dugan +••.••(...)), the organist of the Zagreb Cathedral wrote this piece sometimes between 1892 and 1898 and included it in his collection of "Twenty-Four Versets in all Major and Minor Keys". Certain nostalgic expression already is evident in the theme of this short verset - actually composed in form of fughetta - and, as it is the case in other pieces of this collection of contrapuntally conceived short praeludia, successfully balances harmonic language of Romantic era with Baroque form, permeated throughout with certain quality of Croatian folk melodies. In this video you can see several photos (by Mirko Cvjetko) of the organ in the seminary church in Šalata-Zagreb, conceived and inaugurated by Dugan on February 26, 1932 on which this piece was recorded. Despite being a two-manual instrument of modest size with only 24 stops, its sound dominates the immense space of this basilica-type church with a wooden ceiling reminiscent of an enormous ark. It is one of the most successful and complete instruments produced by the Heferer firm of Croatia, the work of August Faulend-Heferer (1881–1944), being one of the finest examples of Croatian organ building, both visually and acoustically. The beauty of the case of this cathedral-type instrument complements the highly successful acoustic concept: the refined timbres of the individual stops, mostly from the string family (Gamba, Fugara, Salicional, Aeoline, Violine), the rounded and clear sound of the flutes, the efficient Swell box and, ultimately, the rich Organo Pleno based on the Bourdon 16’ and assisted by the sonorous pedal section and Tuba 16’.
