This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article: List of philosophers of language Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago. Learning by listening is a great way to: - increases imagination and understanding - improves your listening skills - improves your own spoken accent - learn while on the move - reduce eye strain Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone. In the second half of the 19th century, there were less operas composed for some specific singers. However, there were a few sopranos for which Verdi wrote some of the early roles: Giuseppina Strepponi (Abigail, Nabucco), Marianna Berberi-Nini (I due Foscari : Lucrezia Contarini, Macbeth and Il corsaro: Gulnara), Antonietta Marini-Rainieri (Oberto: Leonora,Un Giorno di regno: La Marchesa del Poggio), Sophie Lowe (Attila: Odabella, Ernani: Elvia), Marcella Lotti della Santa (Aroldo: Mina), Rosina Penco (Il trovatore, Leonora), Marietta Gazzaniga) Donizetti composed Gabriella di Vergy in 1826, and revised the score in 1838, but the premiere only took place after the composer’s death, in 1869. A combination between the two versions was presented, but mostly based on the revised edition, with Raoul’s part sung by a baritone, rather than a contralto as in the first version. The full opera (1838) was performed live and recorded by Opera Rara, with the soprano Ludmilla Andrew in the title role. Some excerpts of the 1826 version were also recorded, featuring Della Jones as Raoul. Although it was occasionally performed in the 19th century, Mercadante’s Virginia is another unlucky work. There are currently 3 recordings of this opera (to my knowledge, at least). The first one is from Wexford, 1976, with Janet Price and John Tomlinson. The sound is average and although Virginia and Marco's parts are well sung, the rest of the cast is average. The studio recording features a better cast overall (Charles Castronovo, Stefano Antonucci), but the soprano portraying the main role is unlistenable (Susan Patterson). Finally, the third recording is from 2013, Wexford festival, with the star soprano Angela Meade in the title role. Although I tried to choose some excerpts from that performance for this video, I could hardly find any good parts, Mrs. Meade is often out of tune and sometimes she even cracks. I think overall, Janet Price’s rendition was the best, I wish her Italian diction and phrasing were better.
