CEZARY DĄBROWSKI - practice sessions part 1 (an exercise improvise) - 2010 Cezary Dabrowski is a versatile drummer of many talents emotional and expressive in his manner of playing. Born into a musical family (his father Stanisław was an organist, sister Jolanta / a singer), Cezary completed his piano classes in primary school, and at the age of 15 began learning the percussion in the Józef Elsner State Secondary Music School in Warsaw. In 1992, he obtained a degree in percussion from the Instrumental Department of the Fryderyk Chopin Music Academy (now / the University of Music) in Warsaw. Still as a student, he dedicated much time to work on phrasing and sound (many thanks to Prof. Krystyna Diakon). In his free time, he gained professional experience collaborating, among others, on theatrical spectacles. In 1991 he took part in masterclasses on the subject of composition for timpani taught by Elliott Carter in Avignon. During this course, his talent was recognised by the famous French percussionist Sylvio Gualda as well as Carter himself. One of Cezary's main interests was the performance of contemporary music for percussion. In 1992, he won the main prize in the 20th-century Music Competition for Young Performers (organised in Warsaw as part of the ISCM World New Music Days) and a special award for a performance of Four Pieces for Timpani by Elliott Carter (he is the only percussionist ever to have won this competition). After the competition, a CD containing his interpretations of works by, among others, Iannis Xenakis (Psappha) and Kazimierz Serocki (Phantasmagories) was released ("a composition calling for virtuoso abilities of differentiating sound colours has found an excellent interpreter in this young performer" / Studio music magazine). Cezary Dąbrowski has collaborated with eminent Polish orchestras such as Andrzej Mysiński's Concerto Avenna, as well as Sinfonia Varsovia. With Concerto Avenna he recorded, among others, the Jazz Harpsichord Concerto with the famous Polish harpsichordist Elżbieta Chojnacka. In late 1992 / early 1993, as the timpani player and percussionist in Sinfonia Varsovia orchestra, he took part in numerous concerts (e.g. in Munich and Berlin Philharmonic Halls), recordings and festivals (on Gran Canaria, the Yehudi Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, Schlezwig-Holstein Music Festival, the Warsaw Autumn) under the baton of such conductors as Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Jan Krenz, Wojciech Michniewski, Volker Schmidt-Gertenbach, and Justus Frantz. Cezary Dąbrowski has presented numerous interpretations of contemporary works. As a soloist and chamber musician, he has performed several times during the "Warsaw Autumn" International Festival of Contemporary Music, taking part e.g. in concert dedicated to the works of John Cage with the American pianist Darryl Rosenberg. In 1994 he presented the first Polish performance of Yasuhiro Takenaki's piece Memory of the Universe for percussion and tape ("in the perfect and highly convincing, perhaps more even than the piece itself, interpretation of Cezary Dąbrowski" / RUCH MUZYCZNY). During the 2nd Masters of 20th-Century Music Festival in Warsaw's Studio S1 he played Mauricio Kagel's Konzertstück for timpani and orchestra with Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Bruno Ferrandis. Cezary is a versatile musician, working with great ease in different styles and fields of music, from classical, contemporary to rock, jazz and improvisation. Life circumstances forced him to interrupt his active concert life for a number of years, during which he perfected his skills on the so-called fusion drum set. Cezary derives natural musical inspirations from emotions and personal experiences. (http•••)
