Her father, Manuel Garcia, was one of the most important vocal pedagogues of his time, and her mother, Joaquina Sitches, was an actress/singer. Viardot studied piano with Liszt, and was close personal friends with Chopin and George Sand. As a singer, she was highly sought after, and composers such as Brahms worked to convince her to perform their music. Viardot's son Paul was an accomplished violinist, and she wrote these pieces for him. It's also likely that Gabriel Faure would have heard and known these works, as Faure was in love with Viardot's daughter Marianne and dedicated his own violin sonata to Paul. Exploring this 19th-century music through these unique instruments yields new expressive possibilities, and makes it exciting to share with listeners in the 21st century! Live recording at UNC-Chapel Hill, Person Recital Hall, June 2021. Audio recording by Jay Harper, video recording and editing by Jesse Moorefield.

Virgil Moorefield Glenn Branca
Siamese Kits is an exploration of a Ghanan beat, prime numbers, and a bit of French regimental drumming by way of Swiss marching bands. It's also informed by Virgil's experience as drummer for hard-hitting art rockers Swans and Glenn Branca. Renowned percussionist Ian Ding matches Moorefield move for move. The premise of the piece is that a certain 12/8 Ghanan beat also seems to imply twelve as five plus seven, as well as the standard four times three. the fives and sevens get stacked. the mind then says: hmmm...interesting...prime numbers stacked and the ensuing interesting displacement...they meet at the product (5 x 7=35)...what's next? let's try the next primes, 11 and 13...stacked...cool! now 17 against 19...and on into a tightly structured rock drum war, culminating in a brain-and-arm-twisting finale.
