Auricle Chamber Justin Scheibel – Violin [(http•••)d] James Burch – Cello [jamesburchcello.com] Felicia Kim – Piano / About the work: In 2013, I wrote a chorale based loosely on the early-American hymns, in the style of William Billings, originally titled 'Amen'. Never feeling like the piece was complete, I took the chorale out again and began to rescore it for piano trio. And Thus is a fantasia on that piece, taking it's harmonic structure, melody, and pulse from simplistic beginnings. The pulse that begins the piece is there throughout – consistent – and thus, the work meditates on the concept of time and plays with your perception of its structures. / About the composer: Stephen Ian Savage grew up in Westerville, Ohio and started studying clarinet at the age of 11. He now lives in Austin, Texas where he works as a prominent clarinetist, composer, teacher and music director. As an instrumentalist, he champions new and obscure works while pushing the technical and musical limits of the instrument. His compositions explore thought-provoking and intensely emotional subject matter, tending to be 'cinematic' in style, influenced by film composition, live staging, and interactive media. Stephen is the co-founder and co-director of the highly-acclaimed Auricle Chamber, a diverse ensemble dedicated to performing new and modern chamber music. / Thanks to Museum of Human Achievement for hosting us, and Clavier-Werke School of Music for sponsoring this concert. Billings Max Bruch Lockwood Johannes Brahms 1880 2021
Amit Peled, Cello Max Bruch - Kol Nidrei Grammy-nominated cellist Amit Peled performs Max Bruch's Kol Nidrei with the Billings Symphony at Lockwood Performing Arts Center on June 19, 2021. Bruch completed Kol Nidrei in Liverpool, England in 1880, publishing it a year later in Berlin. The work was dedicated to and premiered by cello virtuoso Robert Hausmann, who later co-premiered Johannes Brahms’s Double Concerto with Joseph Joachim, the dedicatee of Bruch’s most famous work, the Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor. Hausmann, who envied the rich creations Bruch had composed for violin, and had asked for something for his own instrument.
