We are leaving the land of Strauss, but staying with German opera for the month of May with a focus on Mozart's "Abduction from the Seraglio." THE SONGBIRD: Zdzisława Donat was born in Poznań, Poland in 1936. She studied in Warsaw with Ada Sari. Gilda was her debut role In 1964 in her hometown after which she won prizes at competitions in Helsinki and Toulouse and made her debut with the Warsaw National Opera in 1971. She appeared all over Europe, with many performances in Vienna, Munich, and Hamburg. Donat was a top Queen of the Night for over two decades. It was her calling card entrée to major opera houses of the world (probably too many to count), but which included her American debut in San Francisco (1975), Seattle's first production of "Magic Flute" (1978), Covent Garden (1979), The Met (1981), and Salzburg every season from 1979 to 1986, alternating the role with Gruberova until 1984. Of course, she did sing a few other roles, too (Konstanze, Norina, Lucia, Violetta, Adele, and Bellini's Giulietta). THE MUSIC: Mozart's opera "Die Entführung aus dem Serial" (which I will refer to in its English translation) premiered in Vienna in 1782, with Mozart himself conducting. It is considered the best work of the German "Singspiel" format: an opera with spoken dialogue between musical set pieces instead of musical recitatives. The opera contains two roles for high soprano: Konstanze, the leading role and a lyric/dramatic coloratura, and Blonde, a soubrette. Konstanze was written for one of Vienna's star sopranos, Caterina Cavalieri, and has three solo arias, a long duet, and a few ensembles. Her first aria, the highly florid "Ach, ich liebte," conveys how forlorn she is having been separated from her love, Belmonte.
