Pacific Opera Pacific Opera Victoria Puccini
Three stories, three settings, three marvellous soundscapes … The impact is breathtaking! Il trittico has been called Puccini’s greatest achievement. The last opera he completed, it is rarely performed in its entirety. When all three of its one-act operas are staged together, the experience is an emotional roller-coaster ride through everything opera can be. Pacific Opera is thrilled to present the first Canadian production of this masterpiece in nearly 50 years. Three operas … one mind-blowing work: Il tabarro (The Cloak): A noir thriller of infidelity and suspicion. Over the course of a single night, a marriage comes to a brutal end. Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica): A lyric tragedy. In the confines of a convent, where all desire is considered a sin, a nun with a devastating secret struggles with anguish and guilt. Gianni Schicchi: A wicked black comedy. A family squabbling over an inheritance get their comeuppance in this zany tale of greed and skullduggery.

La traviata / Verdi February 14, 16, 22, 2019 at 8 pm Wednesday, February 20 at 7 pm Sunday, February 24 at 2:30 pm At the Royal Theatre | In Italian with English surtitles What would you do for love? For Violetta, the answer is: everything. One of opera’s most enduring love stories, La traviata is a glorious work that deserves to be revisited time after time. Escape to 1920’s Paris in this spectacular new production. A tale of two young lovers separated by society and fate, it is one of opera’s most powerful romances. Violetta is a music hall artist – beautiful, sought after, but not quite respectable. As her tragedy unfolds, we marvel again at Verdi’s compassionate and extravagantly melodic portrayal of a woman who isn’t allowed to fit in. Set to some of opera’s most memorable tunes, from rousing drinking songs to passionate love duets, it is a must-see for the ardent opera goer or novice. Tickets 250.385.0222

The drama centres on the complex relationship between two formidable women – Jenůfa and her stepmother – and the consequences when Jenůfa has a child out of wedlock. Fusing folk harmonies with the rhythms of the Czech language, Janáček creates a distinctive musical voice that is at once lush and gritty, radiant and haunting.
