My original plan was to play this piece to celebrate my mother’s 88th birthday. Sadly, however, I am now playing it in her memory. She did not provide any programme notes for the piece, so I am just writing down what she told me. The first movement apparently depicts me as child (the violin part) and my younger sister (piano) playing at a nearby shrine. Listening to the music, one can sense my mother’s happiness as she gazes at the scene. The second movement, Adagio, evokes my mother’s favourite topic: becoming purified as one ascends to heaven. It was meant to express the idea that she would continue to think of her children even after her death. I used to play these two movements as an encore piece, in reverse order, as I did not want to think about my mother’s death. Today I am going to play them in their original order. My mother’s given name, Kiku, has nothing to do with ‘KIKU’, the support group for Tibetan children, of which I am a member. However, it is strange that I happened to join a group with the same name as my mother and become a foster parent through them, and have now ended up playing this piece at this concert. I can only think that I am being guided by something invisible. Sumine Hayashibara (violin) Born in Tokyo, Sumine Hayashibara started learning violin from Professor Ryosaku Kubota of the Toho School of Music.
