Marek Pasieczny is one of the most talented young composers of our time and we feel honoured by this dedication." Susana Prieto and Alexis Muzurakis | DUO MELIS Strasbourg, France (June, 2013) POLISH SKETCHES: suite in six movements based on Polish folk music | for two guitar I. Majestically inspired by mazurka "Up there near the mill rowan grows" from Old Zamosc II. Stealthily based on melody "On the green boundary strip birds eat oats" from Nedez (near Zamosc) III. Nobly based on melody "on the dry poplar a bird sat down" from Rachanie (near Zamosc) IV. Lively based on melody "In the field grew berries" from Nedez (near Zamosc) V. Gently flowing inspired by lullaby "Oh swing, swing linded cradle" from Lubcze (near Zamosc) VI. Joyfully with blustering inspired by dance "Furious Polka" from Lachy Sadeckie Three general kinds of treatment of folk materials can be distinguished in musical works: quotation, stylization and synthesis. Quoting occurs commonly in works for practical purposes, putting together schematic accompaniment, introduction, and ending to the approximate melody of the original folk tune. Stylization is a more frequent phenomenon. In this case there is a conscious awareness of the spirit of folk music. The linking to folklore is not as direct as quoting. However, composers turning to folk music usually have larger artistic needs than stylization or the simple working out of folk melodies. For those inspired by folk music, the most important factor is the expression of the spirit of this music. The regard is not only for melodic and rhythmical features, but also the sound, dynamic, and harmonic aspects. It's about the "sensation of the music" as F. Chopin said. It's about "refreshing" the composer's skills by bringing to it expression through rhythmical diversity (this relates especially to works of the 20th century). As the result of my background I have a close affiliation with Polish folklore. This guitar duo is based on largely unknown and recently discovered folk melodies from Poland (the Lubelskie and Zamoyskie districts). This duo is an innovative investigation into the dramatic and virtuosic possibilities of musical performance in compositional terms / as well an investigation into a widely comprehended sonority of the two instruments. A variety of guitar techniques are explored in this piece including different kinds of rasqueados, vibrato, tremolo, harmonics, glissandos, percussive effects (such as tambora, golpeado). External items (such as capo, slide etc) as well as techniques from the electric guitar - such as tapping and hammering, making this piece colourful but at the same time technically and musically complex. This suite has been commissioned and it is dedicated to Duo Melis: Susana Prieto and Alexis Muzurakis. Marek Pasieczny June, 2013 London, UK #classicalguitar #marekpasieczny
