The #HoustonChamberChoir performed Simon and Garfunkel’s classic #TheSoundofSilence in the @PTXofficial arrangement for the fourth concert of the 2020-2021 season, A Time to Journey Inward. For this very special 100th episode, we're inviting one of the Houston Chamber Choir's dearest longtime friends, Dr. Carey Cannon! Dr. Cannon is Minister of Music at South Main Baptist Church and has assisted us tremendously in preparing concerts hosted by the venue, especially our Hear the Future Annual Invitational Festival, traditionally performed at South Main every season! His blog, A Life With Culture, is online at (http•••). Facebook: (http•••) Twitter: (http•••) About Dr. Carey Cannon: Carey Cannon joined the staff of South Main in July 2013. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from UNC-Greensboro, Master of Arts in Choral Conducting and Vocal Performance from George Mason University, and Bachelor of Arts from Furman University. Carey moved to Houston from Charlotte, North Carolina, where he served nine years as minister of music at Providence Baptist Church. While in Charlotte, Carey was an Associate Conductor for the Charlotte Children’s Choir and Adjunct Faculty for the UNC-Charlotte Men’s Glee. Prior to his call to ministry, Carey was stationed in Washington, D.C., as a bass vocalist with the U.S. Army Chorus and performed regularly for heads of state, dignitaries, and White House events. In addition to his time in service, Carey served as a chorister with the National Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys. This episode is a special feature where we welcome our very own Choral Conducting Intern Emily Jenkins and Manager of Operations April Harris! Jenkins and Harris are the amazing duo behind our next concert, A Time to Lift Up, a special tribute to music educators debuting on January 31st free of charge on our Digital Stage. Join arts and culture expert St. John Flynn as he explores the message behind A Time to Lift Up and the importance of presenting a moment of choral joy especially for educators. Facebook: (http•••) Twitter: (http•••) About April Harris: April joins our team from the East Coast, where her 10-year Arts Management career blossomed and immersed her into several artistic disciplines such as classical theater, musical theater, instrumental music, and visual art. You’ll consistently find April volunteering with arts programs in her surrounding communities to ensure that exposure to artistic creation and performance continues with the next generations. She credits her commitment to supporting the arts to her own early exposure to performance art in school and extracurricular activities. About Emily Jenkins: Emily Jenkins is in her second season with the Houston Chamber Choir as Choral Conducting Intern. She just began her second year of doctoral studies at the University of Houston studying with Dr. Betsy Cook Weber and Dr. Jeb Mueller. Prior to moving to Houston, she served as the Assistant Director of Choirs at the University of West Georgia. She also served as a conductor of the Greater Atlanta Girls Choir. In Atlanta, she was director of middle and high school choral programs in Fayette County and Marietta City Schools. She received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from Mississippi State University studying with Dr. Gary Packwood, and her Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from Georgia State University under the tutelage of Dr. Deanna Joseph.
