Oregon Symphony Wessel Schnitzer Modest Mussorgsky Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall 2012
Oregon Symphony's Bass Trombonist, Charles Reneau, talks with All Classical 89.9 FM's Morning Host Christa Wessel before tonight's concert at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, Oregon. Charles (he often goes by "Charlie") and Christa share witty and humorous insights and as many laughs, as she interviews him about his life as a bass trombonist, how he came to his position with the Oregon Symphony, and the challenges of playing that big brass instrument. On tonight's program, Modest Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" Charlie points out that the bass trombone carries the melody five or six times, a special treat and challege for the Bass Trombonist.

Besides the complete 50-minute ballet score of 1909–10, there are three shorter suites arranged by the composer himself for concert performance which date from 1911, 1919, and 1945. 1919 suite was created in Switzerland for conductor Ernest Ansermet. When it was originally published, the score contained many mistakes, which were only fixed in 1985.
