#willemvantwillertromanticorganmusic The Overture by William Faulkes +••.••(...)) has become famous in the Netherlands through the recording of the famous Dutch organist, Piet van Egmond. When I first heard this work, I wanted to play it right away but it was impossible because this work was out of print at that time. A wonderful work composed in that typically English romantic tradition and written excellent for organ. It is a live recording. You see and hear the stop pullers working hard because this is a Dutch organ with mechanically working key action and the registers also work mechanically. WILLIAM FAULKES was a native of Liverpool, where he spent most of his working life. His early general education was under the aegis of his mother and older sister assisted by William Dawson, another Liverpool organist. At the age of 10 William joined the choir of St Margaret's church, Anfield, and his music education continued under the church's organist Henry Ditton Newman. Faulkes's first appointment as church organist was at St John the Baptist Tuebrook (1881–86). He then returned to St Margaret's Anfield as organist in 1886, where he remained in post until his death. He was conductor of the Anfield Orchestral Society from 1908. Her mother, Queen Anne, second wife to Henry VIII, had been tried for treason on false pretenses and executed when the young Elizabeth was barely three years old. At age 21, she was imprisoned in the darkness and grime of the Tower of London by her half sister, Queen Mary I, a monarch equal in ruthlessness to their father Henry. In 1588, her navy (and the English nation), faced with imminent destruction by the mighty Spanish Armada, miraculously defeated the once invincible forces of Spain's King Phillip II. Thereafter, Queen 'Bes rose to the zenith of her power, and her life would forever be remembered as the Elizabethan era, the first of many pinnacles in the history of the British nation. Elizabeth's reign lasted an unusually long span and gave rise to a veritable English Renaissance in a region of the world otherwise neglected as the backwater of western civilization. Her love and patronage of the arts allowed a somewhat more open expression of new ideas through the literary arts of masters such as William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe and Edmund Spencer. The musical world was also infused with a new energy of enlightened English composers that included William Byrd, John Dowland, Anthony Holborne, Thomas Morley and many others. The Queen herself occasionally indulged in musical performance and dance (as can be seen in two late 16th century paintings included in the clip and the organ keyboard that she used as a child). The soundtrack for this video was made using MIDI files downloaded from various websites. Like all other videos on my channel, I edited the original digital files using the editing software MusicStudio 2. The Holborne Honie-suckle Alman had no specific instrumental designation. The title page recommends violin, viols or "winde" instruments. I put together a "brass ensemble" with tympani. Credits for the original uploads are as follows. 1. Fantasia for 6 (W. Holborne): Charlie Jackson at home.earthlink.net/~cornetto45/cj/cjmusic.html The portraits are nearly all of Queen Elizabeth from her earliest days as a young princess to her later years as an elder stateswoman. There is one lithograph print of William Byrd at the beginning. I included photos of the royal palaces where the queen entertained herself and her distinguished guests. There are also paintings and photos of numerous musical instruments from the Elizabethan era.

Joep Straesser +••.••(...)) Sonata a tre (Points of contact III) : for flute, alto clarinet (or bass clarinet) and piano (1990) 1. Allegro ma non troppo - 00:00 2. Molto sostenuto - 03:48 3. - JOEP STRAESSER Joep Straesser was a Dutch composer. He studied at the University of Amsterdam (musicology) and at the Amsterdam Conservatory (organ with Anthon van der Horst; composition with Ton de Leeuw). In 1962 he was appointed professor of music theory (and from 1975 composition) at the Utrecht Conservatory (retired 1989). Straesser became interested in the music of the Second Viennese School and the post-war avant garde as a result of his studies with de Leeuw, and during the 1960s he used freely serial and aleatory techniques in his music. In pieces such as 22 Pages (1965), based on Cage's book Silence, and Ramasasiri (1968), a multi-layered composition based on a travel song from the Papuan people of Papua New Guinea, Straesser combines experimental innovation with musical intuition, with the result that his music never sounds dry or academic. With the ‘Spring’ Quartet (1971) Straesser abandons the idea of radical parametric composing, using and transforming a theme from Beethoven's String Quartet Op. 131. With his organ piece Splendid Isolation (1977) he admitted consonant harmonies for the first time and, having reconquered traditional elements without betraying his earlier interest in experimental composing, wrote the short opera Über Erich M. (1985–1986) and three symphonies. His denial of tradition gradually became a dialogue with tradition, as is shown by the reference to Mahler in his Third Symphony (1992). At first sight his music may have changed considerably over the years, but permanent features include a technical facility and a density of structural and motivic coherence resembling the music of Webern and Beethoven.
