Orgel der Klosterkirche Michelstetten (Velesovo) | Reihe BERLIN IM 18. JH. ~ Series 18TH-C. BERLIN ((http•••) 7 ) Dom II ~ The Cathedral II English below! C.F. Schale was born in 1713 in the cathedral close at Brandenburg an der Havel, where his father was a clergyman serving the cathedral chapter. He attended school in Magdeburg, where he took organ lessons with Christian Friedrich Rolle. After a stint studying law at Halle university Schale decided to become a full-time musician in Berlin. In 1735 he joined the orchestra of margrave Friedrich Heinrich of Brandenburg-Schwedt, and in 1741 the newly re-founded orchestra of the royal court. According to older sources (e.g. Marpurg, see reference above) he played the violoncello, but Michael O'Loghlin (Frederick the Great and his Musicians, 2008: p.164) says / unfortunately without providing a reference / that the king employed him as second harpsichordist (the first harpsichordist was C.P.E. Bach). In 1763 Schale was appointed organist of Berlin cathedral. When Charles Burney came to Berlin in 1772 he missed him ("M. Schale is likewise an organist and harpsichord-player of reputation in Berlin, whom I was not so fortunate as to hear;" The Present State of Music in Germany etc., 1775 ed., vol. ii p. 224). Marpurg (loc.cit.) mentions that he composed keyboard pieces and concertos, as well as "concertos, trios and solos for the flute, the oboe, and the violoncello", symphonies and "church pieces".
