THE MUSIC: This is one of the lesser known mad scenes in the bel canto canon, from Donizetti's "Linda di Chamounix.” It's a rarely performed opera, though Linda's very famous cavatina "O luce di quest 'anima" is a coloratura recital and recording staple. I learned from soprano Jessica Pratt, who is slated for a new production in 2021, that after the 1847 premiere in Vienna starring Eugenia Tadolini, "O luce" was added by Donizetti at the request of star soprano Fanny Tacchinardi Persiani for something showier when she sang the role. Part of his negotiation with his new diva apparently was that he then needed to shortened what was once a longer and more elaborate mad scene. The original full mad scene was then lost and only came to light about 15 years ago, performed by Sarah Coburn in 2007 at the Caramoor Festival. (Available on another YT channel.) Ricordi issued a new critical edition of the score with the full mad scene reconstructed. I expect most florid sopranos will do like Pratt is planning to do and sing both the "O luce" entrance aria and the full mad scene! Here is Gruberova singing it 1997 in concert in the standard abridged form with Viotti conducting and support by mezzo Anne Salvan as Pierotto. THE SONGBIRD: Edita Gruberova +••.••(...)) was born in Bratislava. She was a child soprano prodigy and made her operatic debut as Rosina in 1968 in her hometown. She auditioned in 1969 for the Vienna State Opera, which engaged her for the 1970 season and her star began to rise quickly in her signature roles of Queen of the Night and Zerbinetta. These roles in particular launched debuts at many of the top opera houses in the world in the 1970s. In the 1980s she began to expand her repertoire into Italian bel canto roles and continued to dominate international operatic stages and appear regularly in commercial recordings. In the 1990s, she started her own commercial record label (Nightingale Classics) and continued to add heavier bel canto works to her repertoire and discography. Throughout the following decades she broke records for career longevity, such as singing Zerbinetta across a span of 36 years. Her final full operatic performance was in Munich in 2019 (51 years after her debut) and her full retirement from singing professionally was announced in September 2020, at the age of 73. She passed away on October 18, 2021.
