Giovanni Battista Borghi Cor Kint Luigi Borghi 1900 1930
This video juxtaposes a slow movement from L Borghi's opus 1 violin sonata with an arrangement made in the 19th century. In 1900 Paul Gunther (Leipzig) published 2 duets for viola d'amore and contrabass under the name Giovanni Battista Borghi. In my performance here, which comes second on the video, you will see a score of the duo made by Cor Kint in the 1930's. The three movements of one of these duets are derived from Luigi Borghi's violin sonatas opus 1. This is the second movement of the first sonata in Borghi's set of six violin sonatas. In this movement the Gunther arrangement retains only the first two bars. If the rest of the arrangement is from other 18th century sources, no one has yet found them. The first and third movements of this arranged duo are much closer to the L Borghi originals. The goal of the arranger seems to me to have been to create a livelier part for the contrabass, including sections where the contrabass plays above the viola d'amore. I took the cadenza at the end of the violin sonata movement directly from Borghi's own 64 Cadenzas for violin, albeit with some pruning.
Cor Kint Mustel Concertgebouw Orchestra 1887 1890 1909 1911 1915 1919 1922 1944 2011
Cor Kint +••.••(...)) was a Dutch composer and violist. From 1909 to 1915 he played in the Concertgebouw Orchestra, and he was the violist in the Holland Quartet (which he founded) from 1911 to 1922. Later he taught violin, viola and viola d'amore at the Amsterdam Conservatory. Reportedly he composed some duos for viola and harmonium... This gorgeous harmonium solo, called Solitude, was included in the "Internationaal Harmonium-Album," published in Amsterdam in 1919. The music is filled with post-war angst and sorrow, but resolves beautifully in the last few bars. Many thanks to Christopher Rini for sharing this volume with me. Performed by Michael Hendron on his Mustel harmonium, built in Paris in 1887; recorded 16 September 2011.
