PROGRAMME: E.J. Moeran +••.••(...)): Prelude (1941) Richard Pantcheff (b.1959): Sonata for Violoncello and Piano (1984) E. J. Moeran +••.••(...)): Irish Lament (1944) Gordon Jacob +••.••(...)): Sonata for Violoncello and Piano (1957) About the musicians: Joseph Spooner's cello performances and recordings have garnered high praise from audiences and critics alike. This is recognition not just of the passion and energy of his playing, but of his success in rediscovering works previously abandoned through ignorance and changing tastes. Yet Joseph's repertoire encompasses also mainstream classical and contemporary works, as is evidenced by the programme for today's concert. Duncan Honeybourne enjoys a colourful and diverse career as a concert pianist and music educator. Commended by International Piano magazine for his "glittering performances", he is best known for his interpretations of 20th and 21st century British piano works. In November 2019 he gave the world premiere of Richard Pantcheff's Sonata for Piano, a work which was written specially for him. Richard Pantcheff is internationally renowned as one of the finest contemporary British composers of Choral, Organ, Chamber and Instrumental music. He read music at Christ Church, Oxford, under Simon Preston and Francis Grier. He was mentored in composition by Benjamin Britten in the last years of Britten’s life. He is currently guest conductor of the Choir of St. Michael at the Northgate, Oxford, and is occasional guest organist for Ripon College, Oxford. His substantial output of compositions has been commissioned, performed, recorded, and broadcast all over the world. Donations gratefully received for Help Musicians UK.
