Live recording by Franco Viganoni, in our fourth World War One commemorative concert entitled "In Search of Peace - 100 years on", honouring the Treaty of Versailles (1919) which marked the end of the Great War. After Gioacchino Rossini's death in 1868, Verdi suggested that a number of Italian composers collaborate on a Requiem in Rossini's honour. He began the effort by submitting the concluding movement, the Libera me. However, on 4 November, nine days before the premiere (which was scheduled for 13 November 1869, the first anniversary of Rossini’s death), the organising committee abandoned it. In the meantime, Verdi kept toying with his Libera me, frustrated that the combined commemoration of Rossini's life would not be performed in his lifetime. On 22 May 1873, the Italian writer and humanist Alessandro Manzoni, whom Verdi had admired all his adult life and met in 1868, died. Upon hearing of his death, Verdi resolved to complete a Requiem - this time entirely of his own writing - for Manzoni. Verdi travelled to Paris in June, where he commenced work on the Requiem, giving it the form we know today. It included a revised version of the Libera me originally composed for Rossini. While the Requiem is essentially a dramatic work, an inevitability considering the composer’s intimate links with the theatre throughout his career, this in no way detracts from the emotional sincerity that is in fact one of its outstanding characteristics - together with its general vitality, the skill of the choral writing and the vivid orchestral colours. It seems probable that today, the value of Verdi’s Mass is greater than that claimed for it in the year 1874, when it received its first performance at the Church of St Mark, Milan. This powerful setting of the traditional hymn text, in which Mary grieves at the foot of the cross for her sacrificed son, seem to me an expression of the sorrow of a nation, reeling from the senseless and brutal killings in South Carolina. Composer Julia Perry is today little known, and that is quite probably another manifestation of the racial bias that continues to pervade life in the U.S. [English translation below/ ] Stabat mater dolorosa Juxta crucem lacrymosa Dum pendebat Filius. Amen./ / / The mother stood sorrowing by the cross, weeping while her Son hung there; Whose soul, lamenting, sorrowing and grieving, has been pierced by the sword. O how sad and afflicted was that blessed Mother of her only-begotten Son. Who wept and grieved and trembled to behold the torment of her glorious child. What man would not weep if he saw the Mother of Christ in such torment? Who could not be sorrowful to behold the pious mother grieving with her Son? For the sins of His people she saw Jesus in torment and subjected to the whip. She saw her sweet Son dying, forsaken, as He gave up the spirit. Ah Mother, fount of love, let me feel the force of grief, that I may grieve with you. Make my heart burn with the love of Christ, the God, that I may be pleasing to Him. Holy Mother, bring this to pass, transfix the wounds of Him who is crucified firmly onto my heart. Of your wounded Son, who deigns to suffer for my sake, let me share the pains. Make me truly weep with you, grieving with Him who is crucified so that I may live. To stand by the cross with you, to be freely joined with you in lamentation, I desire. Virgin of virgins, resplendent, do not now be harsh towards me, let me weep with you. Let me carry Christ's death, the destiny of his passion, and meditate upon his wounds. Let me suffer the wounds of that cross, steeped in love of your Son. So that I might not be burned, by you, O Virgin, let me be defended on the day of judgement. Let me be shielded by the cross, protected by Christ's death, cherished by grace. When my body dies, let my soul be given the glory of paradise. Amen.
