Sibelius Ney Petteri Iivonen Pohjonen
Ruminations is inspired by the beginning of "Masnavi", the famous poem by the Persian poet and mystic Jalal ad-Din Rumi +••.••(...)): Listen to the ney, as it tells its sad tales complaining of separation, as it wails: “Ever since I was pulled from my neyestan my lament has caused men and women to moan. I want a bosom torn by separation to tell of my love's pain and desperation. Whoever is taken from his source will yearn to go back to the time when he could return.” (translation David S. Lefkowitz/David Shenassa) The relationship of this poetic opening to the musical narrative is fairly literal. The opening serves as a “call to attention,” telling the assembly to listen to the sad tale; the tale of pain and separation is immediately echoed with other tales of pain and separation, each in their own style. Despite the exhortation to listen, the other instruments continue with their own laments, becoming gradually more keening. The sorrow of all of these instruments becomes so great that they blend into a single mass of overlapping wailing and crying. After such a great expenditure of energy, the participants express their readiness truly to listen. First echoing some of the melodic material of the klezmer-style violin, the music leads to a sorrowful but hopeful vision of a better future. Ruminations was commissioned by the Yarlung Artists Coretet for the SIbelius Piano Trio, and generously underwritten by Leslie Lassiter, Raulee Marcus and Steve Block, Executive producer Ann Mulally and sponsors Linda and Randy Bellous. The Sibelius Piano Trio are: Petteri Iivonen • Juho Pohjonen • Samuli Peltonen
