From Show Boat to Rent, no Broadway musical would be complete without a love duet. Cornerstones of the Great American Songbook, these numbers have been endlessly reinterpreted, but never as cannily as by Rufus Wainwright and his all-star compatriots in the Luminato Festival's If I Loved You: Gentlemen Prefer Broadway / An Evening of Love Duets. In a spirited discussion led by New York Times music critic Jon Pareles, Wainwright and company examine both their take of these classic songs and the lyricists who crafted them, including such esteemed gay tunesmiths as Lorenz Hart and Jerry Herman. Jon Pareles Jon Pareles joined The New York Times as a music critic in August 1985, after having served as a stringer for The Times since 1982, writing pop and jazz criticism. From 1977 to 1979 he was a music editor for Crawdaddy magazine. In 1979 he was an associate editor at Rolling Stone, and in 1980 a senior editor at The Village Voice. Born in New Haven, Conn., in 1953, Mr. Pareles received a B.A. from Yale University in 1974. There, he studied piano and flute. He wrote music criticism for The Yale Daily News and was the music director for WYBC-FM radio. He performed in rock, jazz and classical ensembles and also was a member of the Yale Guild of Carilloneurs, playing bells in the bell tower. After graduation he worked as a freelance writer, contributing articles to The Daily News in New York, the Real Paper in Boston, Mademoiselle, Esquire, The Washington Post, Gentlemen's Quarterly, Musician, Stereo Review and Video Review. He is the consulting editor on all three editions of the "Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll," most recently revised in 2001. Mr. Pareles lives in Manhattan. Luminato Festival is Toronto’s international multi-arts festival for people open to having art change their outlook on the world. Join us June 19-28, 2015.
