(www.annstookeyfund.org) / From Donald: Bob Convery and I have been friends since our days in Spoleto, Italy in the late 80s. I will always remember the amazing conversation we had upstairs in Spoleto's Teatro Nuovo discussing a commission that was supposed to be the third poem of Hart Crane's Voyages. Sitting at the little, ancient table he used for librarian work at the Spoleto Festival, Bob confessed he'd fallen in love with Crane's entire six-poem cycle and he shyly asked if perhaps it would be OK to set the whole thing... He wrote an extraordinary 1/2 hour work celebrates its 23rd birthday this June with a recording and performance in The Month of Moderns. Jeff sang in Spoleto with both The Westminster Choir and The Crossing and he was in the world premiere of Bob’s "Christmas Daybreak" with The Bridge Ensemble in Philadelphia in 1997. That beautiful work became the title track of The Crossing’s Christmas CD in 2013 – a recording that was in memory Jeff's friend Ann Stookey. We couldn't imagine then that we'd be asking Bob to write a work in memory of Jeff, and, while we'd rather have Jeff and not these memorial pieces, we're certainly fortunate to have this intimate, bittersweet gift from Bob as a part of Jeff Quartets. [bracketed text omitted by the composer] Come, cuddle your head on my shoulder, dear, Your head like the golden rod, And we will go sailing away from here To the beautiful Land of Nod; Away from life’s hurry, and flurry, and worry, Away from earth’s shadows and gloom, To a world of fair weather, we’ll float off together Where roses are always in bloom. Come, close your eyes, and fold your hands, Your hands like the leaves of a rose, And we will go sailing to those fair lands That never an atlas shows: [On the north and the west they are bounded by rest, On the south and the east by dreams; ‘Tis the country ideal, where nothing is real, But everything only seems. Just drop down the curtains of your dear eyes, Those eyes like a bright blue bell,] And we will sail out, under star-lit skies, To the land where the fairies dwell. Down the river of sleep, our boat will sweep, ‘Till it reaches that mystical Isle Which no man has seen, but where all have been, And there we will pause awhile. I will croon you a song, as we float along, To that shore that is blessed of God. Then ho! for that fair land; we’re off for that rare land, That beautiful land of Nod. / Jeff Quartets is a concert-length set of fifteen new works for four voices, presented as a journey over an evening. Unlike many of the works The Crossings sings, with divisi ranging from 8 to 24 voices, the quartets are for 4 parts only; a simple tribute to a musical form Jeff loved. Our composers: Louis Andriessen, Benjamin C.S. Boyle, William Brooks, Robert Convery, Eriks Esenvalds, Paul Fowler, Ted Hearne, Bo Holten, Gabriel Jackson, David Lang, Lansing McLoskey, Santa Ratniece, David Shapiro, Kile Smith, and Lewis Spratlan.

Autumn Sounds 2020 - Programme 1 Duo Chagall and The Fingal Ensemble Septet in E flat major, Op. 20 by Beethoven FRI 13 NOV 2020 7PM DUO CHAGALL present the first of three programs commemorating the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven, as part of their well-established classical music series Autumn Sounds. Marking the series' 10th anniversary, Fingal-born violinist Gillian Williams and her French husband, cellist Arun Rao, have enlisted some of the finest musicians from Dublin, Wicklow, Wexford, Kilkenny, Galway and Milan. some of them Fingal-natives. This ambitious 2020 edition went through a particularly bumpy ride, the duo contemplating pulling it altogether on numerous occasions since the start of the pandemic. Through sheer persistence and with the generous and determined support of Fingal's Arts Office and the Baldoyle Community Forum, they were able to record three programs of chamber and orchestral music by Beethoven and his great contemporaries Franz Schubert and Nicoló Paganini, over two sessions at the end of August and one just a few weeks ago, at the Baldoyle Community Hall. The series opens with a work Beethoven wrote at the age of 30: the great Septet for Winds and Strings in E flat Major Opus 20. Born in Bonn where he trained as a virtuoso pianist under the strict tutoring of his abusive father, Beethoven settled in Vienna in 1795 and soon received the favours of prominent aristocrats. Composed in 1800, the Septet is contemporary with the First Symphony and 6 String Quartets published as his Op.18. Quite possibly his most popular work in his own lifetime (which annoyed him greatly in his old age), Beethoven's Septet was dedicated to the Empress Maria Theresa who was present at its performance on Monday 2 April 1800, one of the many works of the 'Akademie', a benefit concert staged by the composer himself. It is in 6 movements, in the tradition of the 18th century Serenade - a genre particularly prized by Mozart whose music greatly influenced the young Beethoven.' Autumn Sounds 2020 will be broadcast on Near FM at 2pm on Tuesday 10th, 17th & 24th November 2020, and on Draíocht's YouTube Channel at 7pm on Friday 13th, 20th and 27th November 2020. / AUTUMN SOUNDS 2020 Directors: Duo Chagall (Gillian Williams, violin; Arun Rao, cello) The FINGAL ENSEMBLE: Gillian Williams, director/solo violin David O'Doherty, leader (orchestral pieces)/viola (Beethoven Septet) Anne Harte, 2nd violin Craig Pecherek, viola (Schubert Octet) Arun Rao, cello Daniel Bodwell, double-bass Deirdre O'Leary, clarinet Cormac O'hAodaín, horn (Beethoven Septet) Hannah Miller, horn (Schubert Octet) Cliona Warren, bassoon (Beethoven Septet) John Hearne, bassoon (Schubert Octet) Susan Doyle, flute David Agnew, oboe Peter Ryan, 2nd horn GUESTS: Sharon Carty, mezzo-soprano Marco Ramelli, guitar Sound: Simon Cullen (Envelope Audio) Filming: Laura Sheeran (Aurora Visual Media) Recorded at Baldoyle Community Hall in August & October 2020 / Programme 1: Septet in E flat major, Op. 20 by Beethoven Programme 2: Octet in F Major by Franz Schubert Programme 3: Romances in G major and F Major, Op.40 & Op.50 by Beethoven / Draíocht is delighted to showcase Duo Chagall & The Fingal Ensemble online, as part of their well-established classical music series Autumn Sounds. Marking the series' 10th anniversary, this 2020 edition would not have been possible without the generous and determined support of Fingal's Arts Office and the Baldoyle Community Forum, who assisted the series' directors Gillian Williams and Arun Rao throughout these precarious and challenging times of Covid-19.
