Strauss II Walter Susskind Henry Wood Beethoven Proms Royal Albert Hall Bbc Symphony Orchestra 1978
Viennese Nights' were often a feature of the Henry Wood Proms in past years, along with Beethoven Nights, Wagner Nights and so on. Here we see Walter Susskind conducting the 'Thunder and Lighting' Polka ('Unter Donner und Blitz') from a 1978 Prom with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London's Royal Albert Hall. The DVD's booklet notes refer to the audience's "uninhibited enjoyment" of the concert which "could become a little intrusive." However, that didn't affect the splendid performance played here, nor in particular the percussion section! ... It comes from a well-filled 'ICA Classics' DVD of Overtures, Waltzes, Marches and Polkas. ('ICA Classics' ICAD 5026).
