Perhaps more of a ‘reworking’ than a straight forward arrangement of this well-known Welsh hymn. While the outer two verses are relatively simple re-harmonisations of the unadorned melody the middle two verses are more like variations on a theme. The second verse is treated more like a chorale prelude while the third verse is harmonised in a more contemporary close harmony style. Cymru Dewi Sant Tydi, O Dduw, a beraist Dy foliant ymhob iaith, Ac ymhob gwlad a godaist Broffwydi at dy waith, Clyw foliant gwlad y bryniau Ar dafod ac ar dant Am anfon atom ninnau Golomen Dewi Sant. Trwy Gymru cerddodd d’Ysbryd O’i mynydd hyd ei môr, Disgleiria’i blodau hyfryd Yn llwybrau saint yr Iôr; O luniwr glân yr eirlys a chennin aur y pant, Gwna di’n bywydau’n ddilys Fel buchedd Dewi Sant. Y pethau bychain hynny a welsom ganddo ef, O dyro ras i’w dysgu yn awr, er teyrnas nef; Rhag awel bêr Glyn Rhosyn Ffoed niwl pob pleidiol chwant Nes uno Cymru’n rhwymyn brawdoliaeth Dewi Sant. Rhoist lamp y Gair i arwain Ein gwlad drwy’r hirnos ddu, Ar weddi’r saint bu d’adain Tros fywyd Cymru fu; O Arglwydd Dduw ein tadau, Bydd eto’n Dduw ein plant A chadw’n Cymru ninnau Yn Gymru Dewi Sant. Translation: St David’s Wales You, O God, who is praised in every language And in every country your prophets have been conducting your work; You can hear praise in the country of hills on tongues and in music For sending us the dove, St David Your Spirit walked through Wales From the mountains to the sea Illuminating its beautiful flowers on the paths the Lord's saint travelled. O pure creator of the snowdrop and the golden daffodil in the hollow Make our lives as worthy as Dewi Sant These small things we saw in him, Gave us grace to teach them Now, for the kingdom of heaven. From the sweet breeze of Glyn Rhosyn* Fleeing the shroud of hate and craving So that Wales can be bound to the brotherhood of Dewi Sant. You gave the lamp of the Word to lead our country through the long dark night He looked after the Wales that was by keeping the prayers under his wing O Lord God of our fathers, He will be the God of our children, And keep our Wales St David’s Wales (*the place where Dewi Sant founded a monastery, now the sight of St David's Cathedral) Translation by Clare Johnson The original Welsh words are probably still in copyright. However I have been unable to track down the current owner. Any information regarding this would be gratefully received.
