Handel London Handel Festival Handel Festival 2014
Each year the Handel House Museum, in collaboration and with support from the London Handel Festival, work with one school on an opera project. This project provides a school with a snapshot or taster of the full experience of composing an opera. Pupils have the opportunity to attend a Dress rehearsal opera performance as part of the London Handel Festival and produce their own mini opera through a series of workshops both at the museum and their school along side Handel House Composer-in-Residence, culminating in their own mini opera performance. Year 10 Music GCSE students of The Compton Secondary School created 'The Compton Labyrinth', inspired by the London Handel Festival opera 'Arianna in Creta' in 2014.

It was composed in 1712 and first performed on 22 November of the same year under the composer. The roles of Mirtillo and Silvio were originally sung by the castratos Valeriano Pellegrini and Valentino Urbani. The overture is in six movements and is long for its time: it is thought that it may have been originally composed as an unrelated orchestral suite. The revival of the spring of 1734, in which Giovanni Carestini took the role of Mirtillo, was far more successful, but Handel significantly altered the music: only seven of the original arias remained, and those cut were replaced by arias from Handel's cantatas or earlier operas. This production proved popular and enjoyed a run of 13 performances. In the winter of 1734 Il pastor fido was revived again: Carestini remained as Mirtillo and the English tenor John Beard took the role of Silvio. A newly composed prologue, Terpsicore, was added to the opera for this run of performances. The prologue consisted of solo arias, choral movements, and orchestral writing for dance: the danced role of Terpsichore was performed by Marie Sallé, whose dance company had been engaged by Covent Garden manager John Rich. As with all Baroque opera seria, Il Pastor Fido went unperformed for many years, but with the revival of interest in Baroque music and historically informed musical performance since the 1960s,Il Pastor Fido, like all Handel operas, receives performances at festivals and opera houses today.[1] Among other performances, the work was performed as part of the London Handel Festival in 2012. The London Handel Festival continues Handel’s great tradition of nurturing talent through our international Handel Singing Competition. Inaugurated in 2022, the competition has grown to become a major international singing event attracting 180 applicants from 22 counties in 2021. The calibre of the competition is demonstrated by past winners and finalists who have gone on to become internationally recognised musicians, not just in the baroque music field, and give regular appliances in the world’s leading opera houses. They include, Iestyn Davies, Lucy Crowe, Grace Davidson, Tim Mead, Christopher Ainslie, Rupert Charlesworth and Ruby Hughes. The competition comprises a preliminary round of reviewing files sent digitally and then the first ‘live’ round at Craxton Studios in north London. Then follows the Semi-Final with 10 singers (2021) accompanied by harpsichord, and then the Final where singers are accompanied by the London Handel Orchestra, conducted by Laurence Cummings. As well as cash prizes and the chance to work with a professional baroque orchestra, one of the key benefits of getting through to the semi-finals and finals is the increased profile, through significant press and promoter interest, which leads to numerous engagements; this has been the vehicle through which many have been able to build their professional careers. All finalists are also offered recitals and roles in future London Handel Festival events; in recent years, the winners of the first and second prizes have been invited to give recitals at the Handel Festivals in Goettingen and Halle, Germany and the New Walk Museum in Leicester among many other renowned institutions Musical Director - Laurence Cummings Associate Director/Leader - Adrian Butterfield Festival Director - Gregory Batsleer Interim Festival Director - Ed Hossack Festival Assistant - Harry Palmer Administrator - Andrea Lee Orchestra Manager - Anne-Marie Norman Music Preparation - Peter Jones Finalists Kieran Rayner baritone Bethany Horak-Hallett mezzo Hilary Cronin soprano Felix Kemp baritone Adjudicators Final Ian Partridge CBE Catherine Denley Michael George Tim Mead Oliver Mears Semi-final Ian Partridge CBE Catherine Denley Michael George Catherine Wyn-Rogers Caro Barnfield London Handel Orchestra Violin I Adrian Butterfield Kathryn Parry William Thorp Diane Moore Violin II Oliver Webber Theresa Caudle Ellen O'Dell Maxim Del Mar Viola Rachel Byrt Peter Collyer Cello Katherine Sharman Melanie Woodcock Bass Cecelia Bruggemeyer Oboe James Eastaway Sarah Humphrys Bassoon Nathaniel Harrison Harpsichord provided & tuned by Edmund Pickering Special Thanks to St George’s Church, Hanover Square Craxton Studios The London Handel Festival volunteers and stewards The London Handel Festival would like to thank Philip Carne and the Carne Trust, Samir Savant and the Michael Ewart Tribute fund and the endowment gift in memory of Howard & Nan Hopkin for sponsoring the Handel Singing Competition prizes this year Executive Producer - David Hinitt Producer - Andy Staples Broadcast Technical Manager - Tom Mungall Camera Operators - Hafren Park / Michael Panayiotis / Caitlin Pittol-Neville FILM PRODUCED AND DIRECTED BY CLASSICAL FILMS www.classicalfilms.co.uk
