He is credited with being the first to write Mongolian ballet music. He was also a Merited Artiste and Chairman of the Composers' Union. He was born on February 18, 1915 in a place called "Most Khashaat Khudag" in Ulziit soum of present-day Bayankhongor aimag. In 1928-1930, he studied at the Bayanzurkh Uul Primary School, in 1930-1933 at the Teachers' School, and in 1933-1937 at the Irkutsk Vocational School (he graduated from the Veterinary College in Irkutsk). He became a member of the Irkutsk Radio Orchestra. 1937-1939 Veterinarian in Luus soum of Umnugovi aimag (now Luus soum of Dundgovi aimag), translator teacher in Ulaanbaatar in 1939, musician in the state circus in 1940-1943, Moscow University of Music in 1943-1950. He graduated as a composer and conductor (composition teacher E. Messner, teacher of polyphony S. Bogatyrev, orchestra teacher D. Rogal-Levitsky, teacher of management I. Druzhinin). He was a composer and conductor at the State Music and Drama Theater since 1950, artistic director at the Music and Dance High School since 1958, General Music Adviser of the State Committee for Information and Radio and Television since 1960, Chairman of the Organizing Bureau of the Mongolian Composers Association since 1957, Mongolian Music was elected chairman of the Writers' Union (former name). He died on November 25, 1991 in Ulaanbaatar. The Ulaanbaatar Music and Dance College is named after composer S. Gonchigsumlaa on his 80th birthday. In 1961, he was awarded the State Prize of the People's Republic of Mongolia for his dance performance "Gankhuyag", in 1965, the People's Artist of the People's Republic of Mongolia, in 1971 the People's Artist of the People's Republic of Mongolia, in 1975 and 1985 the Order of Sukhbaatar, in 1975 the People's Friendship Order of the USSR. He was awarded the Writers' Union Prize and in 1975 became a corresponding member of the GDR Academy of Arts. In 1981-1985, he was elected to the People's Great Hural of the People's Republic of Mongolia. Composer Sembiin Gonchigsumlaa is one of the innovators who brought Mongolia's musical art to a new level by connecting the centuries-old tradition of music development with the great achievements of Western civilization, which laid the cornerstone of modern Mongolian music and created the great talent of their people.
